  • hi from a n00bie ^^

hey there. just starting FFXI for the first time (that's a lie actually, i'm downloading 4.5 hours worth of updates )

Would like to know any personal recommendations for the game. So far i havent installed any of the add on packs (Wings etc) as i wasnt too sure if i would be using them upon immediately going into the game.

Then of course there are character creations. I'm not normally very creative when playing MMORPGs and go straight into Phys. Atk characters due to the fact they seem to be the easiest characters to level. Is this the same in FF? or should i really check out the other classes too? For instance, Lineage II, i used to run around like mad, grabbing as many aggro mobs as possible and then kill them off in a bunch. Then repeat over and over again. I want to actually take my time and enjoy this game, not rush through it. I feel if i'm paying 8.99 a month i want to make the most of it ^^

Well i'm open for suggestions and would love to hear what each of you have to say about the game.

    Hello there.

There's no reason not to install the expansions. If you don't do it now, you'll end up doing it later, and then you'll just get stuck with another huge update. It kind of sucks to suddenly realize you want to access some area or quest after all, install an expansion, and then wait hours to get back in.

Generally, melee jobs have an easier time leveling at the start, when you're soloing. Once you get to the point where you're partying for XP, it's a bit muddier, since "easy" becomes more a matter of what you like to do vs. what's in demand etc. instead of simply just having an easier time killing and surviving on your own.

However, there isn't anything stopping you from trying every job there is. You don't lose any progress or anything switching jobs. Try 'em all.

Welcome to Vana'diel... and most of all - have fun.

I totally agree about installing all the expansions initially. It saves you and someone assisting you frustration when you suddenly find you need to download for a few hrs before starting some quest-line you're interested in. Happened to me a few times cuz I had the pack that didn't include WotG for the 1st month of my gameplay.

thanks a lot for the welcome and advice! Only got my character to a level 5 monk so far but thinking i might try out a red mage or warrior before i seriously settle down on one. I'm loving the fact you dont have to reroll!
One other thing, is there any way LEGALLY to bump the graphics up even higher than the config does? I'm not too fussed about it, just wondered!

cant tell you how much i'm in love with this game! started my third character (not liking bastok as a starter and mnk and rdm dont agree with me) i'm now a mithra thf. only lvl 7 (i guess that's nowhere in comparison to the rest of the game) but i love it!

only i'm not sure whether i love it because its more of a challenge than other MMORPGs or what.

only a few things bug me though, at the start of playing, is it normal not to find many people willing to party? or is it possible to do solo for a while yet?

and i've looked at the farming guide and it doesnt seem very newbie friendly, although i ave taken it into consideration.

hope to see some of you on asura, if anyone's there

You will solo to level 10. Most jobs can solo up to 20, with various recent changes making that even easier.

Always have signet on, selling crystals will help get you some early gil. Also, check for repeatable quests that give gil as rewards, you may find that you end up killing a lot of those types of mobs as you level.

When you get to 10, that's when you should be looking for a party (In Valkurm Dunes), there's not really a need to party before then. Soloing is much easier now since there are higher amounts of XP delt out from Easy Prey and Decent Challenge than there used to be. I remember when I first started, I was trioing as a WAR8 with a WHM7 and a BLM9 in La Theine Plateau. We ended up wiping by a Akbaba lmao.

Crystals are used for crafting. You could start crafting some things, but it's probably better to just sell the crystals for now. It'll go a lot faster than trying to figure out what you can craft profitably and investing the time and gil into that. Of course, there are plenty of other drops you can sell too (beehive chips, honey, silk threads, various seeds, etc.), but you've probably got crystals coming in at a much steadier rate than anything else.

What they said. Practically every enemy in the game can drop a crystal if you have Signet on. They're "enablers" for crafting - you use the crystal, choose the materials/ingredients for the item, and your character will craft it. They're not something you have to worry about keeping though - you can safely sell them. If you ever decide to get into crafting, it's more practical to buy crystals from the Auction House than it is to go get some yourself.

Bestmen's seals, on the other hand, you should never throw away. They're much harder to come by than crystals, can't be bought or sold, and they're used to enter certain battlefields with profitable rewards. Only enemies that are high enough to give you EXP will drop seals.
