  • Alright, take 2. Hi there!

Sup. I'm just about to start FFXI on the Pandemonium server, first time. Just thought i'd introduce myself.

Gonna be a Mithra. I was planning on going Ranger, or Dragoon if i found myself too poor for Ranger, but now I'm considering black mage.
I SHOULD be playing with 2 friends, one who wants to be a paladin, the other who wants to be a white mage. Just wondering, what would you guys suggest out of the two (three?) jobs I mentioned? I know it's 'up to me' and all, but I just wanted a little advice from someone experienced. I don't want to delve into a really complex class that everyone relies on in a party, either - as I said, I'm completely new to this

Having said that, I'm fine with any class on MMOs, and I'm quite particular to unusual ones(made a battle priest in another MMO). Trying to avoid being the generic swordie class, even though this contradicts what i just typed about not wanting a complex class hurrrrr.

tl;dr Not asking for help or for anyone to give me a cookie-cutter character, just want some unbiased advice :3

Well, because you can go into your Mog House and change jobs at any time, you can try every job in the game if you're so inclined, and I'd suggest that. You start with just six jobs available, and are able to quest the remaining jobs at 30 (though some are much more difficult to get than others), so I'd just suggest play the first six for 10 levels or so, and get a feel for what you like. Unless you get really into a job right from the get-go, then stick with that one.

And welcome to FFXI and the forums.

      Thanks!
I think i'll start with WAR and maybe experiment a little with BLM. Cause from what I've read WAR is a good subjob for most melee class.

WAR is a pretty good choice for getting a hang of the game in general, and yes, it's an essential subjob option for pretty much every melee class except, well, WAR. BLM can be kind of difficult to get going before you get your subjob, but don't let that stop you from trying it out and everything. By the time you get to 30 and can unlock DRG and RNG, you'll have a better idea of how things work and can make better decisions about those.

There is no rush. If you're not willing to take your time, don't be surprised when no one wants to give you much of theirs.

Just wanted to say hello + welcome to the forums! If you're trying to get to 30 as quickly as possible to unlock advanced classes, might I add in the suggestion MNK/WAR? :D Very very little downtime with MNK, and not too equipment dependent because of its evasion. The issue with MNK though is that it doesn't really make a decent sub in the long run like WAR does. WAR + Axe = intense damage though. So be sure to pick up the level 1 Axe from Ryan if you start out in Windurst. :D

Best of luck + feel free to ask questions!

You're likely to need at least 15 levels of Monk to use as a subjob for Warrior, at least until you get to level 30 and can quest for extra jobs.

Oh i see. So monk is a good subjob for warrior for new players? Cause I know you have to get level 30 to unlock the higher jobs.

Re: Alright, take 2. Hi there!

Pretty much. Your best bet as far as getting jobs to 30 would be:

                  WAR/MNK
                  MNK/WAR
                  WHM/BLM
                  BLM/WHM
                  RDM/WHM
                  THF/WAR

Of the six jobs you have available. Then once you get to 30 and can unlock new jobs, you'll have other options for job/subjob combos. You could argue those, but mostly keep your mage jobs together and your melee jobs together. Don't go WAR/WHM, unless you are soloing. And if you get a party invite, change to a melee sub.

Practically any subjob combo can work in certain situations, but for early levels the suggestions I made are probably best.

I'm pretty set on going Ranger or Dragoon...is it a bad idea to level weapons as a WAR (as in, use a polearm as a warrior to set up for dragoon) or should I just go with an axe to level fastest to 30?
Also, i heard that dragoons suck. Would it be a bad choice to play one?
I'm a newb so i pretty much have an infinite stream of questions.

                      YES!

but actually, don't listen to nay-sayers and ppl that tell you all others jobs suck but theirs. If someone tells you another jobs flat out sucks, disregard anything else they tell you forever.

Ranger's a bit on the expensive side for new players, so maybe not the best choice. Dragoon, on the other hand, is fine.

On Warrior, definitely 1 handed Axe and Great Axe are your best bets. Optimal would be to keep both of them skilled up, but choosing only one is a valid option too.

Dragoons don't suck, and haven't for quite some time. Anyone who still thinks they do has been living in a cave for the past couple years (well, aside from maybe endgame, where they're still a little flaky compared to other damage dealers, but that's so far away for you that it's not a concern).

Axe til level 5, when you can get a great axe, then stick with that. Shield Break (a great axe weaponskill) trumps everything.

In general, don't ever bother trying to pre-skill weapons you're going to eventually use on one job on another job. Always use the best weapon(s) available for the job you're currently playing. With the example of Dragoon, you'll be skilling up pole arm naturally once you start playing DRG. It doesn't really save you any work to try and play WAR with a pole arm, and just gimps your potential vs. the better weapons you could be using.

That goes for partying and leveling up, anyway. If you want to buy a pole arm and spend some time on WAR skilling it up beforehand through farming or something, go right ahead. Just realize it's not that much help in the long run.
