  • New to MMOs

Hey all, I am new to MMOs, I joined 4 days ago, and so far I am having a lot of fun. Some people have helped me get the +1 items from the event that is going on now. But, I still have not found a linkshell, and I was wandering how do you join a LS? Also, I am currently a level 2 THF but I also have a level 4 MNK on this character as well. I was wandering is it ok to you use hand-to-hand combat with a THF or no? Also, what kind of gear/weapons should I buy for my THF?

Also what is the real meaning of a MMO? (and I dont mean Mega Multi Online Role Playing Game either lol)

    Massive Multiplayer Online = MMO

Thf forums are here: Thief - Final Fantasy XI :: Dreams in Vana'diel :: Community

and Monk here: Monk - Final Fantasy XI :: Dreams in Vana'diel :: Community

    I'd use a dagger/knife with thf.

As far as ls's, just play the game and make friends. When you find a friend that you really like, inquire about his/her ls.

Welcome to FFXI! oh and your so lucky you chose FFXI as your first MMO, most ppl who come from other MMO's have a hard time adjusting to FFXI.

For the record, FFXI, though an MMO, is a different form of MMO when compared to most other mainstream MMOs. If you can get into FFXI, however, most other MMOs will be cake for you... maybe. Have fun and take advice from other players with a grain of salt.

P.s. wandering is something you do when you are bored or lost; wondering is something you are doing while thinking.

You should use dagger and keep it leveled. If you want to switch to hand to hand if its leveled more power to you. Trying to skill up later on is a royal pain in the rear and you'll regret not doing it from the start.

You'll be pissed when you get to 40, have a skill of 50 with dagger, and need to go back to the dunes or qufim and waste time skilling your dagger up... Actually this is pretty much for any job.

It's kind of a bitch to level a gimped weapon skill level if you dont have a level 75. Even with a 75 though, at a certain point, you'll need to join a skill-up party to take the weapon level higher.

I need to skill up GA and GS and I'm dreading it. That and trying to find a GOOD skill up pt is hard. I'm a drk and I usually end up dying in skill up pts because there is either a lack of healing/refreshing. (Yes I do NOT try to pull hate but.... and I do sub whm if necessary but then the rdm or brd is usually too busy meleeing to take 10 seconds to refresh the pt.)

                  Re: New to MMOs

As far as thf go's, really you should main hand a sword and off hand a dagger once you lvl 20 if you have /NIN, if you are going /WAR till 30 to unlock /NIN main hand a dagger so you get your skill up. You will learn Viper bite the only worthwhile WS on thf up till then is at 33 when you get 100 Dagger skill, once you unlock /NIN main hand a sword and sub a dagger till 33 Fast blade is an awesome WS to use with SA, and even better once you can SATA post 30. GL to you.

Also What Ameroth said about taking advice from other players, that may be true for some yes but you will soon learn who to listen to, and who not to listen to. FFXI is a very difficult game playing wise than all the MMO's out to date so far, so if you can hang in there and have fun with the game you will be set to play any other MMO =] I hope you find my advice useful.

DO NOT USE h2h trust me on this one...... its horrible I have THF to 75, so if you need any advice like macro's that will help you with SATA lineup, or gear you should get feel free to post here or send me a message I have some really useful tips for you.

                  Vocab: SA = Sneak Attack
                  TA = Trick attack
                  WS = Weapon skill

-You can create a macro by going into your menu pressing ~!> and clicking on Macro's then select which book you want to place your THF macro's in =] It is really easy once you get the hang of it!-

To save you some time remember these Macro's and use them in this order:

                  1. Make a seperate Macro for SA should look like this.
                  Line 1. /ja "Sneak attack" <me>
                  2. Next you need to make a SATA Macro looking like this
                  Line 1. /ja "Sneak attack" <me>
                  Line 2. /ja "Trick attack" <me>
(You will want to use this macro right before you pull a mob, or right after just use it before you get to camp, and if you are having someone els pull use it right when you see their fishing macro)

                  3. Now this is what you use right after you lineup to use SATA, (that is the second macro I told you to make) once you have SATA charged up, line up and use this one.
                  Line 1. /attack
                  Line 2. /wait 2.
                  Line 3. /ws "Fast blade" <t>
(or you can use w/e ws you are currently using just replace Fast blade with its name)

Now the first macro I told you to make is so you can build tp, you can use 2 SA's per fight usually, but DO NOT use a ws with the extra SA you use, save that for when you use SATA.

                    Re: New to MMOs

My advice, and as someone mentioned earlier plz take it with a grain of salt, is to lvl your first 6 jobs to 10.

This may sound like alot of work, but at those low lvls, you'll probably need the cash, you'll want to figure out what sort of character you like, and for future situations, you'll atleast be ready to take all of them to the valkrum dunes zone.

If you know you like Melee and not magic users so much, you could probably hold off on lvling rdm/blm/whm and just go with thf/mnk/war.

It's not quite true for Mages though, as rdm's will need /blm and /whm later on. Having blm and whm lvl'd for your sub's respectivly will help you jump into the flow of things even quicker when you get your subjob unlocked. If you can play for 3 hrs a day, you should honestly have all 6 jobs lvl'd to 10 each in about a week. *there is alot of give or take there*

FFxi is different in that your character can change jobs, which from what i've been lead to believe isn't the case in most other MMO's.

Gil is probably a major concern of your's also.

-Always have signet on, when you go to lvl, those crystals will be a good money maker.
-When your inventory get's full head back to town...if your to the point where your about to drop something to make some room, don't. Go sell it for a few extra gil. The NPC's have horrid price's on stuff, but horrid, is still better than 0gils from droping it. 30 second to 1min walk could mean the difference in 2k worth of cash.
-Use this website Final Fantasy XI Auction House - FFXIAH.com for info on "General" Price ranges, and then compensate for the fact that your in one of the 3 starting cities, and possibly lower the price 10-30 percent from what ffxiah.com says.

                    Linkshells

Give some random shouts in the city and someone will eventually pick you up, have no doubt.
-ASK QUESTIONS. embrace the fact that your a "Noob" people will respect it and be more than happy (most of the time) to feel fatherly/motherly/brotherly/sisterly and provide you with the heads up.
-have fun, most people will at some point get bored, and if you can put a smile on their /sigh face's there's a 90% chance they will rather help you out either by lvling up one of their low lvl jobs with you, or even helping you get exp points faster.

                    Gear

If you do decide to lvl up all your jobs to lvl 10, don't mix and match gear. AKA don't get a bunch of melee gear, lvl your war up to 10, then lvl your whm up to 10, then your mnk, then your blm, then your thf....stick with war/mnk/thf then whm/blm/rdm.
-this is due to your limited inventory space. you don't have much room, nor much gil, so every open inventory slot is a place that could hold some treasure for you to sell.
                    - from 1-10 +1 gear is meh. It's nice if you can afford it, but most beginners don't have that kind of established bank roll to be worrying about getting a +1 this and a +1 that. Also the gains at your subjobless lvl would be negligable and not worth it, when you could spend that extra loot on some food, which will improve your stat's dramatically over +1 gear

                    food

at this point in ffxi's life most servers have someone, who has a mule, setup in the 3 starter cities that sells cheap food, there are basically 2 foods your looking for.
                    -Meat mithkabob's for melee jobs
                    -pies for mage jobs.

                    experience points

slow and steady will win you the race over someone skating the edge of death, and killing a tough. Take on Easy prey, decent challenges and when your HP/MP are full, Even matches. *don't forget to get signet*
-If you think there's a chance you might die if you fight a mob. Don't fight it. Rest until your certain you can handle it. It's only about 1-2mins of healing, if you have a LS at this point, drop a random one liner, and enjoy the LoL's you get.

When you've got your first 6 jobs to lvl 10, you may be burnt out. It's cool, take a few days away, play some other game (MGS4,FFIV,COD4,dierge of cerebrus...o.k. not that last one)go jogging, watch some TV.

When you do decide which job you'd like to take higher, at least you'll know that you've gotten the annoying grind out of the way. You'll have a good Idea of what the 6main jobs are capable of.

Above all, play YOUR game, have fun and if someone tells you your doing something wrong, ask them for guidance instead of just un-constructive dribble. Hopefully if their not a-hole's they'll be more than happy to help you out with their advice...which you'll want to take with a grain of salt. just like you'll want to do with mine.
