I'm a redmage on the Asura server at Winddurst.

Aww, you didn't join Garuda. Well hopefully Asura will be nice for you.

Redmage is probably a pretty nice job to try out first since it gives you a little taste of everything. I personally went as Warrior first, but I only took it a couple levels before trying a new job, and then another, and another. I like to jump around a little and try different things. And that's what's great about FFXI, you can freely play any job you want and don't get stuck with something you will grow tired of.

This thread pretty much covers how that works...but it's kind of a lot of trouble to go through, and since you just started it might be easier to just start over again, if you want to switch.

I don't really want to start over and create a new character...because if I make a new one does that mean I would have to pay for that too? Or would it still jsut be 12.99 for both characters?

The monthly fee goes up only $1 for every extra character you have. So don't worry about having to pay $26 a month (unless you have 13 mules). But of course, if you delete the first it will go back down to $12.99 a month.

If you don't care about the character, there's no need to purchase a second Content ID; just delete the first character (without deleting the content ID), then create another on a different World.

Lol sorry. Thought it was you that said that. But, hopefully, I might beable to find someone to spare me a few gil.

Edit: Also I was reading about "Fellows." It said you had to do a certain quest and obtain a "signal peral" or something. What quest do I have to do to get this? When I get to a higher level I'll be looking forward to that quest.

I joined FFXI not because I love FF, but because of the way places looked. The settings that I've seen in trailers and everything look amazing. But it seems that I might not be a high enough level to yet venture to those places.

Some of the places that were shown in the Wings of the Goddess trailer looked amazing. Some places even reminded me of .hack//sign and I can't wait till I'm high enough to go to those places.

The Empyreal Paradox sounds awesome. What's a good level to get to before going there? And I do have all 3 expainsions.

Anyway, I'm a level 4 redmage with all the stuff that you start out with. I put 12 earth crystals on the auction for 700gil. Hopefully someone buys it...but I wanted to know whats something I should buy? A weapon, armor, scrolls?

Also is it possible to make your own scrolls? Or do you have to buy them?

And is there any fast way to make money? It doesn't have to be like tons of gil.

Low level scrolls are generally cheaper NPCs; check out FFXIclopedia's entry for Red Mage for links to info for each spell.

Generally speaking, a mage should have all the spells. Of course, since you are getting exp primarily by whacking monsters with a sword, a good sword will make things go faster. Armor keeps you alive longer for harder critters, and harder critters gives more experience points.

Enfeebling monsters also make them die faster (or kill you slower); Dia lowers a monster's defense and do slip damage; Poison is another source of slip damage; Paralyze will cause critters to hit you less. All those are Lv.6 and under.

So, spells, weapon, and armor all work together for you; you should get them all. (Later on, you'll need armor and accessories with stats which help with spells, but right now you need defense for soloing instead.)

There is no fast way to make gil. Some things don't sell well or for a lot on AH (e.g. Rarab Tail), so you should sell those to NPCs for immediate (but small amount of) gil.
