  • My intro (the lolNewbie guy)

    < /wave > < everyone > !

I'm Victo from the Asura server,
I have been playing FFXI since may of this year.

have taken Corsair, Thief and Red Mage past level 20 ...
Still haven't decided which job to take further.

I've been really interested in both Blue Mage and Beastmaster lately
so they both should reach level 20 before Wings of the Goddess hits
    the stores ...

If you can guys help me decide which job to take to later levels, please do so.

I like complex jobs, BLU being one of them
I also like to play around with mobs as BST...
    Can't afford Corsair yet.

Haha that was the most self-centric post ever posted ...

It's alright, it's an intro thread.

    BLU ftw.
But alas, like a lemming over a cliff, you continue.

The more self centered your post the more we know about you, I suppose.

When picking a job you'll definately need to consider sub jobs. Thief becomes an excellent sub job for Blue Mages in the later levels. Earlier on, though, they rely more on Warrior or Ninja sub jobs.

Beastmasters usually sub White Mage while soloing, and occasionally sub Ninja, or Red Mage. White Mage offers the most benefits while solo, and if you're in a party Warrior or Ninja.

You will need Warrior and White Mage sub jobs for almost every job in the game. Warrior is the norm from 1-30 for melee jobs; Ninja sub can begin at 20; and for mage jobs White Mage is always acceptable from 1-75. Whether you choose to go melee or mage, you'll always have a sub for every job with these two.

I can barely stand leveling my WHM ...

What kind of subjobs are recommended for BLU except NIN?

I'm slowly collecting my Norg fame for the day I unlock NIN ...
For the moment I'm subbing RDM on BLU, for Dia.
Enfeebling is good for soloing I guess...

          Blu subs:

          War
          Thf
          Whm
          Nin

          That is about it right?

Mhh ... the only one of those I have leveled is THF...
I might go for WHM sub for party invites as well...
Then I guess I'll be switching to BLU/WHM.

Re: My intro (the lolNewbie guy)

Well, almost any sub can be useful for any job depending on situation. I guess it depends on how "complete" you want to be about things.

For BLU though, Sev pretty much has it, I would add BLM to that also (hell, everyone should level BLM just for Warp).

EDIT: Dont forget about Subjob Jobs too. You;ll want MNK to sub for WAR, BLM to sub for WHM (and vice versa)...

Just like Thief is subbed for TH and NIN is subbed for utsusemi...

How would RDM not be a decent sub for BLU?
I mean you can cure (which is not really a necessity for BLU but still a plus)
                  enfeeble like crazy.
                  Nuke a bit (magic burst?)
                  "En" spells?

Using /THF as support job is actually more for Sneak Attack (and Trick Attack, later). Sneak Attack forces next attack to be a critical hit, and Blue Magic physical spells can "critical hit", oddly enough.

BLU/THF easily out do BLMs when it comes to damage/MP efficiency. Blows away BLU/NIN, too. It really is an impressively potent combo in the hands of capable BLU players.

RDM's enfeebling spells depends on, well, Enfeebling Magic skill. Of which, BLU has none. Most offensive spells from /RDM pretty much become useless once you get past Lv.20's, due to half level skills.

BLU actually has a very nice selection of enfeebling tools from its native Blue Magic, so there's really no need to look to /RDM for that.

En- spells damage depends on Enhancing Magic, IIRC. Again, of which, BLU has none. En- spell for BLU/RDM would be limited to half leveled skills.

                    * * *

Lv.30+, the best DD BLU is BLU/THF. BLU/NIN is can spam spells with less care for safety, but need excellent MP recovery to keep up with BLU/THF. Note that faster the party, the worse BLU/NIN performs. However, /NIN does have the advantage in parties with weak tanks.

Around mid Lv.20's, a BLU/WHM can comfortably handle main healing by himself. Another alternative route is BLU/WAR for tanking, which is a solid combination in the low levels (esp. after Bludgeon becomes available).

DD: /THF, with /NIN as viable but less efficient.
                    Tank: /WAR
                    Healer: /WHM

Those are the standard choices. There are odd situations where unusual support jobs like /BRD (Lv.10-19) and /RNG (Lv.20-29) would make a lot of sense, but you probably should stick to the normal support jobs until you understand Blue Mage a bit better.

I'll switch to THF sub past level 30 then.

                      What about pre-30?

Generally, it's hard go wrong with BLU/WHM before Lv.30, since BLU/WHM is good for solo and party work. Lv.24+, you can make a pretty good case for BLU/NIN solo'ing, though.

It's very nice having /WAR as an option once you have Bludgeon for party work, in case there are no tanks seeking.
