I don't know what you mean by the 10 months, since PS2 doesn't have a fee to play any game online.

Re: Ps2 online.
Your step father sets the boundary on your FFXI game time for your own good.
It is not nice to try to side step his instructions by trying to sneak in more FFXI in your own room. =/ It's your conscience, and your life, but I would recommend you do not do this; sounds like he's trying to be a good parent to you, and you should respect his effort.Bamboo shadows sweep the stars,

Re: Ps2 online.
Just to make sure you're aware of this as well, FFXI for PS2 is only available on the HDD you used to be able to get for the older models. It can be and will be a relatively high pain tryin to find one. I don't even think you can hook it up to the newer slim-line PS2's, but I could be wrong.

Re: Ps2 online.
you'd have better luck getting and old PC and running it. PS2s now are hard to find (the proper version), and the HDD/FFXI kit is impossible. If you were searching that hard, they'd find out.
Have you tried asking your dad WHY he limits your time, though? He may or may not have a good reason. Some parents just do it, and that's a horrible reason, some do it because their kids are slacking off or need to get in shape, and that's a valid reason.
I partially agree with Ita on this one (shocking..) - I might give you some advice on it if you give us his reasoning, but you should try talking to him about it first.
Giving him good valid reasons why playing an MMO is good would help.
Things to get you started: Managing finances, working in teams, leading groups (only if you do lead though), it's cheap compared to almost any other hobby.
Also, something that might convince him. FFXI is an anti-drug!

Re: Ps2 online.
Another positive for any video game is that it is an interactive hobby/experience versus watching TV or movies which is entirely passive. Between the two I prefer video games at least I'm not slowly turning my brain into warm slush.

Re: Ps2 online.
You'd have to find the HDD for the PS2 that comes with FFXI and then find all the Expansions, which will be nearly impossible. Especially Chains of Promathia. I had enough trouble getting Treasures of Aht Urghan, it was a pain getting CoP.
If your computer can run it, just buy The Vanadiel Collection 2007 on PC. That's what I did once I built my computer and it's better than on PS2.
But I agree, it's not good to try and sneak around your Dad with something like this. Maybe he has a good reason for not letting you play as much as you want. This game can be addicting and can affect your school work, job and social life if you let it.

Re: Ps2 online.
In that case, knock yourself out; if you have a PC, then I'd recommend playing FFXI on that over trying to get hard drive and find copy of FFXI for PS2.Bamboo shadows sweep the stars,

Re: Ps2 online.
Just look online for the HD PS2 add on and the other expansions.
Once they are installed you should be good to go.
FYI: Investment for system:
* FFxi orginal game
* Expansions x 2
* HD add on for PS2
* Network Adapter for PS2
* PS2 Key board
If they will purchase the game components for you and you can locate them. Then you will not have to worry about any other charges for using the PS2 version.
>> PS I purchased all the components for a business trip about a yr or 2 ago and it ran me roughly $100 - 200.
>>> PPS I like me PC version better

Re: Ps2 online.
There's no reason why running anything for too long would mess up the screen, unless he's talking about burn in... but that only happens if it's static for a long amount of time.
Anyway, PC will probably be cheaper, I can't imagine your computer can't run FFXI nowadays.

Re: Ps2 online.
Many older (and some new low qual) 'big screen' tv's used to have an issue with the lenses burning a picture (or a background when dealing with games) in to the screen or off of whatever the light was being reflected off of. When I was a kid, my father used to say the same thing to me when I tried to hook my ps1 to it. I didn't listen to him and indeed did happen, and I spent the first few months pf my first job paying him back. I have a 4 yo girl now who plays on her leapster constantly. The tv she uses is one I had back from the early 90's. It's a 21" and with games that she plays that has a constant background, you can see the 'scarrings' or burnings on the screen.
