Just wanted to stop by and say hello to everyone. I'm Shaaun, I'm 18 and I'm from Louisiana. I'll soon be a player of FFXI, and I hope it's worth the money. I also wanted to get a few pointers and tips on the game before playing, that way I don't mess my character up and have to create a new one, which would cost more money(Which is the stupidest thing I've ever heard of on an MMORPG, no offense). Here are a few questions:

    - Ninja.. Is it better as a sub-job?
    - If my main job is a ninja, can I wear ninja masks and wear "cool" looking ninja clothes?
    - If my sub-job is a Ninja, will it allow me to dual wield 2 swords if my main job is a Paladin, or red made?
    - Are there specific job requirements for advanced jobs? IE: A ninja would require a level 30 thief?
    - Once you choose your main job and have a sub-job, is it possible to still change your main job and sub-job, or are you stuck?

Unless you choose a race or gender you don't want to play, you wouldn't need to change characters. And if you did want to change one of those few unchangeable settings wouldn't you just delete the character you didn't like and create a new one thereby paying for only one character?

    1. Define 'better'
    2. You could equip anything a NIN of your level could equip.
    3. Dual Wield is a lvl10 NIN trait, it would be accessible to any job set as your main once that job is lvl20 or higher
    4. No. Only requirement to start the advanced job quests is one of the standard jobs at lvl 30 or higher.
    5. You can change jobs at any time in your mog house.
I use a Mac because I'm just better than you are.

NIN is better as a sub when you have a job that needs some tanking ability thanks to it's Utsusemi ninjittsu, but whether it's better as a sub or not is in the eyes of the beholder.

I you want to Dual wield, you can if your NIN is a lvl 10 sub, (so your main needs to be lvl 20 before you can dual wield).

NIN don't wear masks just head gear and the norm, nothing special but their Artifact Armor

For your 4th question, yes any job at lvl 30 has to do the advanced job quest, once unlocked the lvl 30 job doesn't need to be your main at all times for your new advanced job to work

For your last question yes you can change your sub job in your mog house, but to get a subjob you need to do a quest at lvl 18.

I'm quite sure others will add to what I've said, but good luck on getting NIN!
Please don't blame anything I do or say about FFXI wrong on ignorance but rather on inexperience.

        Re: Enter Zero

Thanks for the reply, guys. Would it be any good to have a Paladin with a ninja sub job class, while dual wielding 2 swords, or would it be more efficiant to use a sword and shield or two handed word?

I just bought the game from gamestop.com, so I'm waiting for it to come in.

        One more question:
For the 30 day free trial, will I need to put any credit card information?

PLD standard (almost always) subjob is /WAR for a little extra defense and more importantly, Provoke. A shield is a PLD friend.

Yes you will need Credit Card info for the 30 day trial.

            Re: Enter Zero

Hmmm. I'm still confused on what job to become and what sub-job to use. How about a Red Mage with ninja sub-job with dual wielding 2 swords?

As for the credit card part... guess I'll be playing even later on.... I need to get things situated with my credit card.

              Re: Enter Zero

RDM/NIN is a powerful soloer, but again in this case /NIN is not going to be your standard subjob. For RDM you will want to have both /WHM and /BLM available.

You haven't even started playing yet. You can change jobs at any time so even if you pick one at random to start as it doesn't really matter. You'll see how subjobs work when you start partying with others, usually around lvl10~12.

Well, I always was for trying something that "most" others wouldn't try. Adds some diversity to my characters. I guess it'd be better when I play though...

Is it true that it costs $5 to delete a character?

                  Re: Enter Zero

It costs nothing to delete a character.

As far as unique subjobs go. If you think of it before you've started playing, then others have also thought of it and tried it. The job combos that are pretty much 'it' have been worked out over the time that people have been playing based on that jobs role in a party and the benefits that the subjob brings.

                    Re: Enter Zero

Well, I'm sure there has bound to be a few combinations that have been underrated. And besides, every player has a different style of gameplay. I've seen so much diversity on on other MMORPGs, and quite a few players who don't use the "standard" tactics given the class/job they are... I guess gameplay will help me out with deciding. I'm not sure which job I'll enjoy the most though...

I would like Paladin, but to me having a sub class as warrior would be... boring.

Paladin tanks with /warrior sub. That's what they do. But before you judge the job to be boring, play it first.

I don't see how subbing /war suddenly makes a job boring.

Well, it's subjective, so whatever the reason, it'd be only my opinion. But the reason why I say it's "boring", is because a warrior is not much different than a Paladin(Which is just a beafed up Warrior with white magic and different skills).

So by boring I just mean.. not so interesting. And if that's the standard, then everyone who has a pally uses this combination... so, meh?

                            Re: Enter Zero

Paladin in FFXI is not like paladin in other American MMORPG. PLD is the number 1 defender, heavy tank in this game. They have a lot of abilities to build hate and boost defense. Which is why they are perfect for tanking job. They remain the best defensive tank through out the entire game.

You have to understand this. Main job determines who you are. Sub jobs will not change you into something your main job isn't. Sub jobs are there to simply help you boost your main job a little further.

So basicly, You can't just think PLD/WAR is boring.... because no matter what sub a PLD uses, he'll still be a PLD. Which means every sub job you use, PLD will still be boring.

Paladin needs provoke to keep hate on themselves efficiently. /Warrior is a must.

Tanking is a pretty fun and challenging role in this game imo.

Hmm. Ok, but what is a good Dual Wielding Main Job(2 swords)? Because that's one of the things I'd really like, lol. I guess that means it would have to be a main job which would be good to have with a ninja sub-job.

Are ninjas any good for a Main Job, and what sub-job should they use?
