    Re: Newbieeeeee

I do have one big (and quite simple) suggestion:

Read the intructions manual, all of it, most starter questions are answered there.

Also, keep your Playonline ID and password in a safe place, as they are very important.

And last but not least write down all the personal data (such as the exact address) you registered with. If you ever call support they might ask for these info (although you shouldn't have to worry much about it).

XI is a great game, and even though it has some issues like RMT it's still very enjoyable and the comunity is pretty good (with the exception of some bad apples but that's what /blist comand is for).

I've been playing for more than 2 years now and it doesn't seem like I'll quit anytime soon.

      Re: Newbieeeeee

I'ld definatly agree with starting war if your looking into melee it's the universal sub for damage dealing jobs and is generally acceptable past 30 due to beserk provoke and added attack and defence.. I found leveling several jobs to 20 gave a rough idea of if I liked the job since your just starting to see what each one can do and when your looking for party in Quflin Island you put a search coment of what jobs you are willing to party with and their levels. (Once in a while people read the search comments :+D)
The downside of this method is you use up a lot of storage space for multijob gear.
Goodluck and welcome to Vandiel I hope you have as much fun as I have.

can you still use your mouse and keys though even if the joypad is configured?

or is it a case of one or the other?
You can use both, but the mouse does almost nothing in this game, since it was designed for the ps2.

Contrary to what every says, I wouldn't suggest starting with WAR. I'd suggest starting with MNK (if you're gonna be a Hume, make sure you start in Bastok.) Take MNK to 18, then once you unlock MNK, go to WAR/MNK. That way you have your sub job leveled all the way to 37. When you get 37 you can unlock the advanced jobs (actually doable at 30, but if you go to 37 you have a fully leveled sub for any advanced job) like dark night and go as Dark Knight/Warrior all the way to 75 if that's what you want to and never have to worry about a sub. Or you could level war to 75 but if you're going to be a melee, I definatly suggest MNK to 18 first then war.

Just make sure you go through the FFXI Configuration Tool and test your buttons in game to make sure you have a setup that's comfortable for you. That may take a bit of time.

            ---

As an aside, there is a USB Mouse that's usable with FFXI/PS2, but it's not particularly useful. I never touched my USB mouse during the PS2 beta, since the controller was just a lot more comfortable and accurate for targetting.

Keyboard control is OK, and I know a lot of players that prefer it, but I really like not having to deal with the keyboard when I'm just trying to move around, or am not obligated to type when in combat - the controller is just seems a lot more comfortable for long-term play to me.

Well, as I'm sure you know, in this game you have a main job and a sub job. The thing is, you can't level both at the same time. The only job that gets experiance is the job set as your main job. If you were to start as others suggested with WAR you would take WAR to 18, then you would be able to start the subjob quest. When you unlock sub jobs you'd have to switch jobs to MNK and take it all the way to 18, then switch back to WAR and go from there. If you do it the way I suggested, you can level MNK to 18, use MNK to unlock sub job, then switch to WAR and go all the way to 37, kinda helps with the inventory management and not having to stop playing WAR once you get into it. Though ultimatly it doesnt matter, this is just how I would do it.

Agreed. I've played FFXI from the day it was released in the US and from day one the keyboard interface just seemed odd to me. I went and bought a PS2 style USB controller that day and have used one ever since.

Actually, technically if DRK was going to be the class of choice the more expedient way would be thf to 18, war 37, thf 37 - drk to 75. Since thf is practically required in alot of parties for DRK's 60+ can't remember the last time i partied with a drk that didn't have thf sub on after 60... kind of off topic but thought i would throw that out

Each job has specific subs that are *Cookie Cutter* tried and true, proven combinations, War just happens to be the all around cookie cutter.

Hey, I'm also a newbie, FFXI should be here tomorrow!! (If i'm lucky)
I was thinking of starting as a taru mage (most probably red) but they seem to get a lot of stick & have a bad reputation for not being very kind? I'm not too sure now, seeing all the suggestions of warrior/monk, i'd rather be tarutaru though does that restrict me to mages mostly? I would like to do physical attacks etc. though I'd like to do all jobs, which would be the best race for me to be in order to have a good chance at all jobs? :} sorry to change the subject.
                  Look out for me!!

being a taru isn't gonna restrict you to mages only, every race can play every job. But being a Red Mage you aren't going to get to melee. It says Red MAGE not Red WARRIOR. Red Mages don't melee in parties, if you do you'll get yelled at. If you want a melee that can cast, be a BLU or DRK.

Oh okay thanks, would that mean, that I should start with warrior?

Being a TaruTaru WAR might not be the best choice though, & i feel like i'd be at a disandantage at the start of the game.

You will, you'll have low HP and STR.

If you want a well rounded race pick Hume. If you're pretty sure you're going WAR all the way try Elvaan as they have good STR.

Well, I like the look of Taru's & their magical abilities, though I wouldn't like to be restricted to staying at the back & supporting I guess. So Hume's aren't that bad at magic? I'm not sure about Elvaan as I'm not going for full on physical attacks I just thought it'd be a smarter move to make than straight away magic, I thought getting into that later would be easier.

Anyrace can play any job with the right gear. You'll be fine as a Taru WAR most of the time.

yes, however, the really good pieces don't come until later levels and in the beginning, you might struggle a bit. it is during this period that you need to play smart and make good use of food. the same applies to taru playing melee.

                                Thanks Yyg!
