If you've ever used MrArgus (yeah, that NM warp-to/claim hack), one of the apps that comes with it lists strange things...
Event moogles that aren't actually in the game appear on it, at 100% hp, also several things with names like the "warp" thing here, and even the rainbow in La Theine counts as an NPC.
It's possible the guy somehow found a way to interact with this hidden stuff.
hay guyz let's have a computer play the game i pay for monthly for me.

not that I'm 100% believing this picture. but we shouldn't under estimate those hackers I guess

but there are others who with the help of their art and their intelligence
transform a yellow spot into the sun.

My friend lost 20 million gil worth of stuff on Midgardsormr by a hacker. He believes a "keylogger" was imported into his system somehow from a download he tried to get for FFXI. I wouldn't mess with these things that claim to "give you an edge" in the game. Just remember, first it started with those nonstop dedicated players who do not exp, do not do missions, and forgotten about doing quests that camp NMs. Then it became gilsellers, then it became gil selling websites.

A game hack and what you're describing are two different things. What you describe is a "Stop downloading every little thing you see" situation.
