  • I'd like to first say that I love your screenshots Faluzure! They are great! They give me inspiration to keep on leveling so I could see these places with my own eyes! Also, I have a quick question. I'm a level 50 blm now subbing it with whm. Do you think it would be more beneficial for me to start subbing rdm instead of whm? Thank you! ^^

    • All that talk of 100+ saph. quadavs and no water IV drop..

      dropped last night!

      \(o.o)/

Was doing a testimony run (pld, blm, rdm, drk) and we camped out near the adaman/ruby quads in the dome..

and it dropped off a saph!

      *so happy*

      saved me 300k

You got to keep it (as in you didn't split it with the PT)?

Well.. it depends. For purposes of purely offense, the RDM sub will help you more than the WHM sub will. I never use WHM when I solo/farm because RDM's phalanx lets me survive better than a WHM ever could.

But.. in party play. I think its best to go with WHM sub. There will be many times when the WHM's healing properties will save your ass (and your parties) and even alleviate some duties that your WHM has. The ability to use Erase, all the curative spells like paralyna, poisona, etc on your tanks can help your WHM and anything that makes the PT recover faster lets you gain faster XP.

I tried RDM during an NM hunt (from the Byakko HNM run) and to my dismay, I found myself helpless when Byakko did the mass paralyze on our melee several times. Had I been white, I could've helped the alliance recover.

Anyway, RDM is still a good choice and I think its good to have both available. I think the more jobs you have available, the more of an asset you'll be among other players. If you have time, you can just level Red & White to 37 and leave it at that. Personally, I'm working on RDM, WHM, and SMN. All are above 37 (except SMN, that's a slow process since I'm mainly focusing on Red), so I can swap on the fly to whatever sub is necessary to the party.

Assuming we're still talking about high level SAM vs DRK, then DRK probably gets more invites because of spin slash. If I know my WS's correctly, Great Katana's 225 WS Tachi: Gekko is distortion element. The same goes for Scythe's 225, Cross Reaper. When chained with Gravitation, distortion type WS's allow for level 3 Darkness Renkei. However, DRK has A- rating in Great Sword as well, so that means that they have another 225 WS, in this case Spin Slash. Spin is different from the previous two WS's because rather than producing distortion, spin produces fragmentation, which when paired with fusion produces a level 3 Light Renkei.

Soo.... that would mean DRK has access to both level 3 renkeis, meaning they can fight pretty much anywhere, and still close renkeis for incredible damage. It is not uncommon to spin for 900 dmg and see a light renkei for 1100+ dmg. In Gustav Tunnel bone pt's, either MNK or DRK can close light renkei effectively (assuming they bring thf sub anyway). Other jobs either suffer in damage (i.e. daggers do 50% normal damage vs bones), or they can't close light renkei.

Then again, if I'm wrong about SAM's not having access to light WS, then my whole post is moot eh?

As far as damage itself goes... I have no clue. Damage can sometimes very skewed because processionaires (crawlers you fight around the time of the 225's) take huge amounts of damage with their low defense. With souleater on I could easily close SC for 1200dmg on cross, and 1200+ on the darkness. I don't know if the same could be said for SAM. Some might argue that meditate allows for huge extra damage outside of SC, and this may be true, I can't comment since I don't know for sure.
Sams have acess to light and dark they dont need to switch weapons. I have respect for DRKs its going to be my next job. Im currently a lvl 72 Sam. Sub wise i use war and thf depeding on the PT. Now as a war sub your job isnt so much to do alot of dmg at once its to be able to SC with two melees or maybe 1 SC which you can do 2 Wses in. Your dmg is more spread out as war sub none the less the dmg is often overlooked But its there. Now as it goes for thf Sub. Tachi Kasha and Tachi Gekko both can do same dmg as cross or spin slash. The one advantage a sam has with thf sub is meditate Kasha and Gekko dmg is based off of tp . Meditate will allow you to almost have 250+ TP for each SC you do. My average with Tachi Kasha is 700-850 with 100-200tp. 800-1000+ with 200-300tp. SC dmg all depends on whether you use 3 wses or 2 wses to make the SC. If you use two wses to make say Light. The maximum dmg you can do with Light is the same as the ending ws. Example Savage Blade> Tachi Kasha. But if you use 3 wses to make Light such as Impulse Drive>Savage Blade>Tachi Kasha the Light SC has a possibility of doing alot more then the ending ws. Either way both Sam and Drk are great for dmg Drk has souleater for the extra dmg and sam has meditate to boost theres. Although Drks are the class to have for ending SCs on HNMs. Sams still have there place for some NMs to start off the SC for DRK and THFs to end.

Hey Faluzure hows it going? Awsome Pictures you have cant wait to Pursue some of these things myself.

              • Hi Silver. I'm doing good I guess. I'm almost level 61 RDM now. I seemed to have breezed through it fast. I post these pics whenever I can. I brought up the SAM thing because well, Strifey asked the same thing you did.

Personally, I think there's more of a reason why DRKs are chosen over SAMs. You brought up a good point when you confronted me about it and I could only tell you what I saw & experienced from my LS. I almost want to say it has something to do with the equipment. But I can't be for sure.

                      • Personally, I'll take a SAM over a DRK any day - I have never compared SAM and DRK damage on single hits (although I think it's not all that different without Souleater), but 2 skillchains are just yummy, especially when both end up in either light/darkness or distortion.

Alright, I'm a little bias as WHM (WHY CANT THE FRIGGING DRKS KNOW HOW TO WORK SOULEATER??! WHY?????!??!!? ;_; ), but from my experience PTs with SAMs seem to be faster.

I'm going to go back through it again and look a second time, but if any one has pictures of Hecatomb armor I would realy appreciate it if you would post them. Thank you.

Rofl, unfortunately there are a lot of NA DRKs that feel it's okay just to spam Souleater every 6 minutes (It has a 6 minute downtime) But I know how you feel, having to throw cures out to the DRK as they tank and lose HP from normal hits.

Personally, I haven't used Souleater for normal hitting for about 30 levels. In all honesty, I only use Souleater to close skillchains on the Exp chain 5 monster, and even then I immediatly take it off as soon as my weaponskill is done.

So all you DRKs out there, take some advice :p Use Souleater only when it's needed (IE: Chain 5 monster, your party is struggling because of links, etc) It'll save your white mage MP in the long run, because PLD or NIN is a LOT easier to heal than a DRK that's both tanking and using his own HP for melee damage.

                            • To Fergie & Kyrial: Ya, I did blow through RDM fast. I mean I was getting about 15K XP per day in like, a few hours. I'm at a point now though... where I kind of want to pause it. The reason being is because I got all the Summons this weekend. Battled them again the next day and went to get Fenrir. After 2 losses, I lost 6K xp from Raise 1. I won the 3rd time though and now that damn dog is mine. So I leveled SMN a bit, I'm level 11 now by soloing (buying tons of Yag drinks). So now I don't know if I wanna continue SMN or go ahead and finish up RDM. As I was creating my macros and testing them for my SMNs, an NA player did a /tell to me and called me a showoff. WTF?!?

To Strifey: Speaking of BST/WHM, I've found more and more uses for them, but in rare occasions. When fighting Fenrir (BCNM), I was limited on the # of SMNs I could get, so a BST offered his help. He used those named beasts vs Fenrir. I was surprised at how effective it was. Although he didn't do a lot of damage, his beast was a placeholder for the SMNs to resummon their avatar. BST is actually kinda fun though. It something you can do if you're bored because you don't need to rely on anyone but you and another charmable mob.

To Miriamel: :spin: Haha yay, you wrote in my thread. I'm blessed! I'd rather take a DRK over a SAM because if a SAM does 2 SCs per battle, I'm screwed. Bursting twice can lead to me getting hit at least once because I would have so much hate. Sometimes the PLD is really good and can hold it well. As for blink tanks that rely on a SATA on them, I find it hard to burst twice.

To Murasame: Hecatcomb Armor kind of stinks... because nobody likes the slow%. I've never seen it either because there are better alternatives. I'd assume if someone got it, it would be for show only.

Oh and I saw a RDM with full AF2 (except hands, he had Zenith Mitts) on my server. I don't know if I got a screenshot because he zoned at the same time I pressed the key. While I had help with the Avatars, I saw a Thief with AF2 Body, War with AF2 feet, DRG with AF2 hands & feet. I didn't get a screenshot of those people though (I forgot). I did get a screenshot of a BLM with AF2 body though (DROOL). I'll post those up sometime. Oh, and I did get some Fenrir pre-battle pics.

                              • Haha. ^^ Yeah, it all depends on the point of view really, and the jobs in the party. A melee heavy PT without BLM has different needs than a mage heavy PT.

Ah, there don't exist enough skilled blink tanks anyway. If their defense breaks and they panic, they drop faster than flies, which means big cures, and unfortunately, mobs aren't a fan of big cures. And when the mob hits me for 200+, those are the times I'm glad to be an Elf. w
