I'd really like to sign up for one of these, but I can't use modelviewer to get a good shot. Could someone with modelviewer and a few spare minutes please help me out and do up a couple of shots for me? Please PM me if you can, thanks^^

i haven't heard of the 'modelviewer' you use, but it might work if you hit the "Print Screen" button ("prnt scr," next to "backspace") to capture the screen and then "Paste" it in microsoft Paint
It's all good, Sevv's gonna take care of it for me. The modelviewer(usually AltanaView I think) is what you use to get pics like Sevv's, it lets you view character models with whatever gear you want to put on them in different poses and whatnot, it reads the .dats directly from the FFXI files I believe. Unfortunately I'm a console player(PS2 & 360) and I don't have a comp capable of running FFXI, so I can't use a modelviewer and it's difficult to get nice, clean screenshots.

You don't have to able to run FFXI to use a model viewer... As long as you can install the program (which you won't be able to do only if you don't have the space, or if you have a processor that can't top out over 200MhZ, if not lower) you can run the model viewer. The only thing you can miss out on is the updates, which generally don't have many dats in them (exceptions are, of course, AFs for new jobs and new equipment that may come out). However, most machines which may not be able to run FFXI can still launch POL and FFXI enough to get the updates as well.
my computer is super-powerful. i don't own ffxi, but could i do anything with the modelviewer if i had it? it'd be fun to try and recreate my own original characters using ffxi, just for some temporary fun. i love doing that in games

You would need to download the game first then the Model Viewer to do so. What the Model Viewer does is read the numerous types of files (armor, face, monster, music, pose, etc) that FFXI displays throughout gameplay. The Model Viewer simply runs a program that lets you pick and choose what you want to see without actually playing the game.
But as the game gets updated and new armor is added, you would need to update as well, and to update you would need an account. So unless you could find a free download of the game, along with someone willing to send you all the files that get installed via update, the Model Viewer wouldn't be that useful.
Though I'm sure people here would be more then happy to help you create these characters if you could give them some sort of description of how they look. Be advised however, the face selection in this game is limited at best.
