  • FFXI Fan Fiction -- "The White Knight"

This is my third piece of fan fiction that I have wrote and have been vastly improved upon due to helpful criticisms I have recieved from those who have been kind enough to contact me about it. Hence, I am now able to produce a product that is superior to my previous which is the fan fiction, "The White Knight."

    :::Disclaimer:::
Any character names used within the piece, do not reflect anyone who may have that exact same name on the boards or in-game. I did not go out and simply pick names off of ffxionline.com when I was considering my characters. Please do not get offended if your name comes up as it was not intended.

So far in this piece I have produced a prologue which I will list below. Within the next few days chapter one and two will be produced and posted here. If there are no replies to this thread a few days after chapter two is posted I will cease posting it as I would come to think that no one is interested in the story.

    ::rologue:::
    [orignally posted at http://members.rogers.com/motmonline/prologue.html]

Darkness had covered the land in death and despair. It seemed bleak; there was no escape. At first, only the Grand Duchy of Jeuno was destroyed but the destructive forces would eventually turn on the other kingdoms. It was necessary for any mortal to take up arms and fight to protect those that they love and care about.

The fighting ensued but it was a meaningless effort. Although, allied forces were able to defend their respective kingdoms, to a point, but they could never defeat any enemy stronghold. The Orcish forces were too strong, their machines of war couldn't be defeated. Countless mortals, whether they were Hume, Elvaan, Tarutaru, Mithra or Galka were massacred.

For almost 5 years the terror of the Orcs onslaught was deep in the hearts of the people. You would fall asleep one night and not wake up the next. It was a horrible time to live in the world of Vana'diel.

There was a group of six young mortals, who lived most of their late childhoods in this fear and had just become at an age where they could defend themselves. Little did these individuals know, they would become heroes and be remembered as legends. They were; Sempher, Donnovan, Ansem, Setrof, Sarah and Vincent.

Sempher is an Elvaan that took up the practice of the warrior. In his youth, he wielded toy swords and fought with his childhood friends. Not many could defeat him and that continued into his adulthood. In fact, during the epic quest to defeat the Orcish forces, it was said that he killed almost 10,000 Orcs -- a number no one ever came close to matching.

Donnovan is a Galka who was originally from Bastok. During his youth, he labored continually in the Mithril mines, as per his fathers orders. As a result, his muscles developed at a young age and his strength is formidable. Donnovan realized it would be best to take up the role of a Monk. While he didn't put up the number of Orcs killed that Sempher did, he played an invaluable role nonetheless.

Ansem is a Hume who moved to San'Doria, to live with Sempher when he was very young. It was necessary for him to do this because his parents went missing and never returned. Fortunately, due to his skills with a sword, Sempher took him in. Although, Ansem didn't take the warrior path, he decided to become a Red Mage. Ansem didn't like the idea of merely fighting and not being able to protect himself properly. This is the major reason behind becoming a Red Mage -- he could fight with his trusty sword and cast magic effectively to protect himself when the need arose.

Setrof is a Tarutaru that is surrounded in a complete mystery. Ansem was the one who found Setrof initially and introduced him to Sempher. When Setrof was asked where he was from, he refused to respond. The only thing he dispensed was that he was a Tarutaru Black Mage. At first, there was mixed feelings on whether or not he should be trusted, however, Sempher took the risk and trusted the young mage. Fortunately, that risk paid off and he is the only one in Vana'diel with the ability to cast the high level magic spell, Flare. This ability was key in defeating the Orcish forces.

Sarah is the lone female in the party that defeated the Orcish forces. Also, she was the only one from Windurst and a Tarutaru, obviously. For all of her childhood, she studied in a structure called Heaven's Tower. That structure is in Windurst where mages train day in and day out to become potent in the art. Not only did she possess the ability to cast high level healing magic, but she is the only one in Vana'diel capable of casting Holy.

Vincent, like Setrof, refuses to tell where he came from. Also, similarly like Setrof, he was an invaluable asset. Even to this day, Vincent is the sole Bard in all of Vana'diel. The Bard, while he only sings, can be incredibly useful in keeping the party energy high and key to success in any battle.

It has been 10 years since the Orcish forces were defeated. Ansem has come out with some details on what they fought but it has been kept to a minimum. It is the general impression, that the people shouldn't worry about what had happened and focus on their future. This has what has been preached and this is what has been done.

Recently, however, Ansem hasn't been in San'Doria to answer questions to the public and has been on long excursions. When he returns, he hasn't given a reason. This has made everyone uneasy but he assures us that there is nothing to worry about.

There must be some reason to Ansem's excursions, but that is not the purpose of this story. The purpose of this story is to show the upcoming events through the eyes of a Tarutaru, Brian. His parents died during the Orcish conflict and he is now 22 years of age. He lives with his Uncle in the Tarutaru capital of Windurst.

The mighty has had their time to go into the history books with their epic tales; those of a smaller nature have been ignored. It is time to show the world that even the smallest of creatures can make the largest of differences.

    .:Chapter One: Master Kuro:.

A city lies in the heart of the great Sarutaburta plain. A place which has been destroyed constantly throughout the course of history. What is the point to living in a place that is destroyed in such a constant manner? The Tarutaru, do not possess the common sense to move away from the capital of the Federation of Windurst -- they insist on staying where they are.

Mithra on the other hand, are quite different, and not just in size and shape. Previously, they were as stubborn as the Tarutaru, refusing to leave their home in the Federation's capital. However, since the last time it was destroyed, most of the Mithra left to reside with the Elvaans in San'Doria. Others who did not flee to San'Doria, merely occupy the port town of Mhaura. Unfortunately, for the Mithra, they are a very small minority.

Despite the mindless destruction that the Federation's capital has suffered, there is one building that always stood strong and never fell -- Heaven's Tower. The mystery behind Heaven's Tower is magnificent and complex. Even the Tarutaru that study within the tower, do not understand the true power that it possesses.

Heaven's Tower is more than merely a spectacle of Tarutaru ingenuity -- it is a place of training. One of the known facts about the tower is that it possesses an extraordinary amount of magical energy which powers Black and White magic in the known world. With this knowledge in hand, the Tarutaru have practiced early magical powers in the tower and their magical abilities excelled to a new level.

Although, that is not to say that the magical power that the Tarutaru harness in the tower is threatening to other nations. More so, it is only so much for personal protection. The knowledge to unlock the extremely destructive powers of magic is not yet known to the world.

There is a young Tarutaru, who has been recently attending Heaven's Tower for almost 5 months and has excelled in the art of Black Magic. However, it is not of his own choosing -- his Uncle chose that path for the young Tarutaru. He goes by the name of Brian, and he is to find out today how much his powers have developed under the tower and the tutelage of Master Kuro.

"So Brian, are you ready for your examination today? You better not show us up, not good for the most powerful student in the class to make others look bad." Said Kurk, a long time friend of Brian. He was shorter than Brian (which is really short considering he is a Tarutaru) but was much bolder than Brian.

"Well, you know Kurk, I'm going to have to try my best and perhaps show up all of you. My Uncle expects the best, and if I don't show it, I don't know what I could be going through later."

"I'm just kidding Brian. It doesn't matter, do your best, I know what your Uncle is like and I wouldn't like to feel his wrath."

Brian's Uncle is a man that goes by the name of Tal. Tal isn't your ordinary Tarutaru living in the capital of Windurst, he is a veteran of the last Orc War. The War itself only lasted 7 weeks before the Orcish forces withdrew, but it was enough to change Tal's attitude completely.

Brian and Kurk arrived at the gates to Heaven's Tower. Outside, there was many Tarutaru's socializing amongst themselves, mostly females though. Usually, Brian and Kurk would hang around outside and try to sweet talk the female Tarutaru's, but there was no time for that today. They had much on their mind and they thought it would be best not to keep Master Kuro waiting.

As they advanced towards the gate, they kept their minds focused on the task at hand. Finally, after their short trip and mental strain, they reached the gate to Heaven's Tower. However, the gate to Heaven's Tower isn't like the gate which we are used to. More so, it was a white portal which transports it's travelers to the top of the Tower. It was necessary for such a device to be installed at the ground level as no one has ever seen the top of the tower. With haste, Brian and Kurk stepped onto the platform and disappeared in a flash of light.

"This is it Brian, it's time, whether we like it or not." Kurk said as him and Brian were materializing.

Brian took a deep breath and closed his eyes, it was a method he used frequently to concentrate. He turned to face his friend, Kurk, and nodded his head, it was time to meet with Master Kuro.

From the materialization point, Heaven's Tower was nearly 10 stories tall. The paths were wide, about 20 feet or so and there was winding stairway to the top. In the center of the tower, spiraling down, is a magical energy which Tarutaru drawn from when learning magic. As Brian and Kurk started to ascend, they ran into Master Kuro and the rest of the class.

"Little Masters, you're late. Of all the days to be on time, why couldn't it be today? It doesn't matter, follow the rest of us while we move on to the training hall." Master Kuro said in a rather large voice to Brian and Kurk. Master Kuro, unlike Brian's Uncle Tal, was a rather short Tarutaru and many were taller then him. However, his short stature didn't decrease his ability to speak with a loud and commanding voice, far from it.

The class, lead by Master Kuro, emerged into a long hallway after climbing 4 stories of the great tower. The halls were loosely lighted and you could feel the magical energy circulating through the hall. It was a fantastic place to test rising Mages as there was almost an endless amount of magical energy.

"Brian, you're up. Show us what you got."

Brian stepped forward towards the center of the hall with his staff in hand. His staff was generally longer than many of the other students, as it was taller than him. The reason behind this is that the staff that Brian wields, isn't the Heaven's Tower training staff, but a gift from his Uncle from long ago.

"Brian, a series of monsters will be spawned in front of you. Your job is to defeat as many as you possibly can. Defeat them all and you'll have passed the examination. Remember, though, you may only use Black Magic, use any other form of attack and you'll be disqualified from the examination."

As Master Kuro valiantly said, a series of monsters did spawn before Brian, there was a total of five, in fact. The first three monsters that spawned were a low-leveled Rarab, Crow and Manadragora. It wasn't until the fourth monster where problems arose for young Brian. A Yagudo Initiate spawned and Brian had difficulty dealing with it. However, in the end, it was defeated, but Brian had nearly all of his energy depleted.

"Don't look so tired Brian! Just one more to go and you'll have passed! Somehow find energy!" Kurk exclaimed while he saw his friend bent over.

Master Kuro initiated the last spawn and out came an Orcish Fodder. Brian looked towards it and quivered in fear. The Orcs haven't been seen for years, why is one spawning now?

"Master Kuro!" Ashley, a female Black Mage began, "Why is an Orc there? Won't you help Brian?"

Master Kuro didn't pay much attention to what he had spawned until after Ashley's cry. "Brian, do NOT engage that Orcish Fodder, it's not suppose to be spawning! You can't defeat it!"

"It's alright Master Kuro, I'll be fine, don't worry." Brian initiated his attack on the Orcish Fodder, so it was too late for anyone to do anything. Once Brian began his attack, he was locked on and only he alone could attack the monster. Not only that too, but the Tower created a barrier around Brian and the Orcish Fodder, this prevented anyone from healing either combatant.

    "Damnit Brian!" Master Kuro exclaimed.

The fighting began between the Orcish Fodder and Brian. The Orcish Fodder was at lleast four times the size of Brian, and not just in size mind you, in muscle as well. The axe that the Orcish Fodder carried was larger than Brian himself, but this did not intimidate him at all. The Orcish Fodder made the first attack, but his attack missed! Brian was able to get out of the way with ease. With this advantage in battle, Brian immediately began his attack by casting the spell "Stone" on the Orcish Fodder. To the shock of Brian, the spell did minimal damage to the Orcish Fodder. In fact, it did nothing at all. Panic ran through the mind of Brian. He slowly, walked backwards towards the edge of the barrier that the tower created and crawled into a ball. Brian thought this was the end.

"From the depths of the island to the south-east, from the heart of the demon, create the element of his fury. Fire!" In a flash of light the barrier disappeared and the Orcish Fodder fell to the ground, dead. When Brian heard the thunderous fall of the Orcish Fodder, he looked towards his mentor, Master Kuro, he was the one who casted the spell -- he saved his life.

      .:Chapter One: Master Kuro Continued:.

"Why did you do something so foolish Brian? I told you that the Orcish Fodder wasn't defeatable, yet, you ignore me and do so anyway. Why did you do it?" From the tone of his voice, Brian knew that Master Kuro was mad, as he was being lectured in his office.

"I'm sorry Master Kuro, I thought I could defeat him, in my heart, despite what you said." Brian, for the first time since the incident, felt horrible as he clearly disobeyed his Master.

"Now, now, Kuro, don't be so hard on the boy. Being brave and bold is a quality I like in students these days."

Brian looked behind him and saw a medium sized Tarutaru walk into the room. The Tarutaru was dressed in White Mage garments, which is a long white robe. Occasionally, it is difficult to tell whether a White Mage is male or female, but this white Mage was female -- she was the Lady of Heaven's Tower.

"That's not the point Jessica. He defied my will and deserves ample punishment!" Master Kuro said in a harsh tone, despite the fact that he knew that he was speaking to Lady Jessica.

"I am to be the judge of that Kuro, and you know that. I am forgiving Brian for that action, he was using his instincts and that is to be commendable. Have you given him the certificate yet?"

"Yes, he has it. Now, Brian, get out of here, you got what you came for."

Brian walked out with his head down low. Jessica felt bad for him, as he didn't deserve that kind of treatment. However, she knew, as well as Brian did, that defiance to Master Kuro came with severe dislike.
