FINAL FANTASY XI
CHAPTER XVI
Basic Chemistry
Elarisa hadn't felt left behind when she had noticed all of her traveling party had left her in the pursuit of various things. She had bid farewell to Osamu, and just missed Aadia and Magus. Each of the three were in essence complete strangers she had just met off the street, yet she did feel a sense of disattachment that she defined as almost illogical when she went to sleep upon that first night they were gone. Now it was morning, and Elarisa had begun gathering the notes she had made from the workings of she and Torukoishi.
The previous day was spent in vigorous pursuit of knowledge and chemistry. After introducing the concept of a universal antibody to all ailments to her Blue Mage superior, Elarisa had worked with Torukoishi to find key ingredients to such. Her hypothesis of how to go about it wasn't far off from the truth, and with the help of such a scholarly colleague she was assured a potential victory.
Aside from the Matoyan sage that she had ordered from him, they weren't making much concrete progress. Their list of accomplishments was discovering what pieces of the puzzle were not. A simple herb used for curing poison cancled out the effects of the Matoyan sage. They had also discerned that the liquified tonic for curing a magic impairment, known as the Echo Screen, dissolved when added to the substance used for healing cuts and wounds.
Elarisa was not intimidated; part of the process of finding what the panacea was involved experimenting in the method of trial and error. Her notes finally forced themselves into the folder she had brought along with her briefcase; there were quite a bit of them. Torukoishi was more than she could've hoped for. A brilliant milestone of the trade of science masked in the appearance of a warm, humble old man. He was not without his flaws, the description of the Wasser-Kristall she had been given was coherent yet vague. It seemed that Torukoishi had known only so much of the story, or brushed her aside for the moment to work with her on her project.
The Wasser-Kristall was just the same as any other water crystal, however it had more time to develop. Torukoishi seemed to skip the reason why such an object had come into being, or why it was lying in the middle of the desert civilization of San D'oria's capital. Perhaps it was deemed unimportant, Torukoishi had enough experience under his belt to decide it so. But it also seemed that he might be hiding information about the crystal for a later time, as if he didn't want to see the surprise on her face or dispute facts at the time she had asked him. She thanked him for at least assisting her in creating her elixir of sorts.
Down the hall she traveled, and into the lab that was located adjacent to the main living room and center for doing business with customers. Elarisa's presence seemed to be felt instantly by Torukoishi, even though her steps were so planned and carefully quiet. He would nod to himself and possibly Elarisa as well, staring down through a lense at a vial of green liquid. It was a strange translucent emerald color, and Elarisa hadn't seen it before. If it was what she thought it to be, it should have been a hue of topaz.
"What is that you are looking at?" Elarisa set her notary upon a table where it would not be in the way of anything Torukoishi was doing. The old man was silent as he slurred the liquid a bit in it's container by shaking the vial, but eventually he came to recognize the young Elvaan's question. He held out the tube with tongs, but nodded to her apparent hesitation. He was quietly telling her that holding the tube was safe, and with that assurance, Elarisa took it from the holders he carried.
"It is called Hi Potion.. Spelled H-I, yet not pronounced 'he'. It's a stronger form of a standard healing potion, and it seems to mix better with the Echo Screen." His voice was very monotone; Torukoishi had dawned an avatar of acting more suited to the work place of a chemist. Elarisa let her mind wander, and the thought crossed that her superior was up all night trying to find the ingredient combination to make this Hi Potion she held in her hand now. It was strangely aromatic, and she almost felt like taking a sip. She would have, but it wasn't custom for a chemist to do away with the work of a colleague in such a manner; this she held in her possession might be the last drop.
"So this will work better? How does it fair with the Matoyan sage?" It was integral for a cure to temporary blindness be allocated in the mixture, but the look on Torukoishi's face in response was almost chagrin. It looked as if he did not initially know the answer he was about the unveil for her. Was this a success, a sign of progress being made towards the creation of this unfathomable accessory?
Instead of saying anything in words, Torukoishi gestured out his hand. Elarisa understood, she gently placed the vial back in his grasp, and with that watched him take a small set of tweezers and add in a ground amount of herb. There was a light glitter, and the liquid did not turn brown like before. She could not fathom why one healing potion over another would work. Torukoishi set the created vial into a small rack, nodding again to the progress made, afore writing down on a slip of paper a small mathematical figure. To Elarisa, it appeared to be a ratio in standard numerical form along with Hume sidenotes. The practicality of speaking the same language but writting it differently managed to evade her comprehension again.
"You see... " Torukoishi began without being spoken to, "There is a different crystal used in the mixture for the high potion, hence it's irridescent green color. Crystals not only are integral for certain chemical mixtures to work, but also react differently to different substances. The water crystal shards used in the original healing potion do not fair well with Matoyan sage, because the plant qualities of such absorb away the liquid secretions that are melted water crystal. It's another strange property of the alchemy of crystals, this series of trial and error. Eventually you gain a second sense for it."
Elarisa nodded, now she was gaining more knowledge of the crystals like she had hoped for, but that still didn't explain all her questions about the Wasser-Kristall. It was heralded as the largest of its kind, but she still wasn't sure what made it so special. Was it just a larger form of an existing crystal, or did it have special meaning? Somewhere in her bag she had pins with the symbol of the blue crystal on it, it looked much like a small rose. She was unsure if that was the true avatar of the cerulean hued facet of Elvaan culture. Collecting herself, she once again recalled how much she had been bestowed with. A foreign specialist, that lacked any kind of racism, and who thought with a different perspective.
"So in order to do all of this, we must examine the properties of other crystals to see if they will carry the effects of certain existing answers to smaller parts of our greater problem." Torukoishi did seem to have taken interest into Elarisa's study afterall, more than she had expected. Before, she thought of herself as an aspiring rookie who was without name, but apparently something had given her merit next to this titan. She silenced her mind, she needed to stop thinking like a child in a candy shoppe. The entire time, rather than devoting time to studying, she was either worrying about her acquaintances on the road or worshipping this experienced Blue Mage.
She took out her brief case, and began to take out notes from her folder that she could show that related to various kinds of Elvaan curative items that might work in the overall solution they were brewing. Torukoishi scanned over them, seeming to comprehend the cursive scripts of the Elvaan easily. Elarisa was going to recieve effective help on this project.
"So what have we got so far?"
"A product that yields poison, restores site, and heals wounds."
"What about the Echo Screen?"
"I haven't tried that yet, we'll get on it."
"Please take your time, this is really my charge."
"You're a good young woman, you just restrict yourself too much."
"I..."
"Let's just get to work, alright?"
