I'd like to point out at this point that what you did there is illegal, and really, REALLY not nice. Posting the artist's website address is one thing, even posting the URLs of the images is another, but reposting their artwork without their permission on your site is a very, very big no no. :mad: And yes, zipping them up counts as reposting.

Remember that almost every art site has a bit somewhere saying not to repost their works anywhere. Even if they don't, persuant to the Berne International Copyright convention, it's implied unless specifically mentioned otherwise.

While I'm sure they're really great images (I can't look while at work), do the artists a favor and post URLs to their site so people can see their other works, too. A lot of artists put their artwork up for free, and all they get out of the deal is their web counter incrimenting and the occasional comment via email or BBS. (with the really rare exception being a person trying to sell comics or CDs on their website as well.) Reposting stuff elsewhere robs them of that.

Not to mention that most images don't have any form of identifying marks on them, and if they do, it's usually a royal pain to find the original artist's page. Especially if it's a Japanese artist, or a common name, or... I donno how many times I've seen an image reposted that I would *love* to see more of the artist's works, but can't because the image has been stripped of all idenifying comments (including filename).

I mention this because I am trying to learn how to be an artist myself, and while I'm no where near good enough to draw fanart, or really anything good, I'd still hate to see anything I created placed on someone else's website without permission.

That's a really bad attitude to have. I didn't mean to sound hostile here, but, wouldn't it be easier just to put up a HTML listing to those images on the Japanese sites rather than collect them in a zip file? I'd hate to see you lose your account over something silly like this.

I gotta link to the sites. Linking to the images is worse, since it rapes other people's bandwidth.

What I've learned from the internet is that images and sites will disappear. Stuff has to be saved to file! X3

Also Very True, I have a few CD-Rs at home with some of my favorite art sites on them, some of which have closed since I last mirrored them...

BUT.

Like you, I still don't have the right to redistribute that art without permission. It's better to try and keep artists happy so they keep drawing, than offend them by stealing their works. I had one artist, Yukipyon, explode at me because I posted his URL to a site about people who enjoy CG sites. Seems after I did so, he got harrassed for over a year by people demanding freaky pornography and had his art reposted halfway across the net and back.

His site is gone now, with a big warning page in red letters saying how much he hates foreigners (Non-Japanese).
