  • Zone in, zone out, rezone?

    Hi all!

It's me again, the noob. What is this zoning thing all about? I've been reading up on quests and missions on FFXIclopedia and the articles are talking about zone in, zone out, rezone...I don't understand what they mean (I'm dutch, so I don't know the full English dictionary...yet )

    Thanks for your replies!

Zones are areas in the game. Bastok Markets, South Gustaberg, Dangruf Wadi, Lower Jeuno, etc. Zoning in is moving into a zone (e.g. going from South Gustaberg to Bastok Markets is zoning into Bastok Markets). Zoning out is moving out of a zone (the same move would be zoning out of South Gustaberg). Rezoning is just going from one area to another, back to the same area again.

Ah, thanks Ellipses! I thought it was something like warping...so it's basically a difficult expression for a simple action...

I'll also add that zoning is probably the easiest way of losing any aggro you get from mobs

Shirai: geen idee, zou ik ook wel eens willen weten!

(and for our "foreign" readers: Shirai would like to know how many Dutch ppl play this game...is there a way to find that out?)

Another thing that might come up, although I seriously doubt anyone uses it anymore, is DZ-- De-zone. The Japanese version name for the BLM's "Warp" spell.

Isn't D2 our misinterpretation of DZ? If so I know that we still use that.

Re: Zone in, zone out, rezone?

I'm pretty sure that D2 is derived from DZ, yes. I know I'd seen Japanese players use D2 as well, so I'm not sure if it was a mistranslation that went back and got picked up on the other side, or if D2 just picked up instead of DZ2.

There's Warp and Warp 2. Warp 2 is referred to as D2. I've never seen DZ or DZ2. I've seen X-Zone and other zone style abilities in other FF games.

Re: Zone in, zone out, rezone?

D2 = Dezone 2. Japanese don't type DZ because it's not the abbreviation they would need to use or type. D is the first character they type if using romaji input method instead of direct kana input method, when trying to type the DI kana combination to start typing dezone. Dezone has been called Warp or Exit in American FF games, just like Telepo has become Teleport, Warp, or Exit. The Japanese games have had a consistent spell naming system since the first FF, but ours has been inconsistent because of maximum character limits, and it taking more Roman letters to represent the sounds than it would take Japanese characters (due to it being one kana per syllable instead of several letters per syllable). You can easily fit Blizzaga in four Japanese characters, but Ice3 is the best way to keep the meaning with only four Roman letter spaces. We didn't get the required naming space until FFVIII, and then they adopted the Japanese naming scheme from then on.
