  • FFXI on PS3

Been looking into getting a PS3 lately, as well as possibly coming back to FFXI. I have some questions:

1- Has SE said anything about a PS3 release, as the 360 got?
2- From what I can see, the latest 80GB PS3s don't even support software compatibility. Am I misreading things? Is FFXI's PS2 version completely unplayable on them?
3- If the latest model PS3 will play FFXI, how well does it work? How's the upscaling, etc.?
4- Does PS2 FFXI support graphic ratio changing the same way the PC version does?
5- Does/can PS2 FFXI be installed to the hard drive; requiring no disk to play?

I'm already pretty confident I know the answers to these, but no point getting screwed over by cockiness. And the bonus question for everyone who knows jack shit about PS3; anyone ever dealt with getting an account's password out of/changed by POL? From everything I've heard about POL, I imagine they would require some proof of the credit card, which I might not have anymore...

1- I've heard nothing, unfortunately. I really wish they would, though. -,-'
2- FFXI is like Singstar in that there is specific coding available that allows the PS2 versions to play on the PS3. For FFXI you need to download the PS2 system data from the Playstation store. Once you set that you partition 10gb for the game, if I recall correctly. Its all pretty automatic. ^.^`
3&4- Its the PS2 version in every way. -.-'
5- It operates just like a PS2 with a hard drive. You use the discs to install, then load up POL and do all your patching. When you want to play, the icon is listed under the games tab in the crossbar.

I renewed my account during the Return to Vana'diel promo. There was some screw-up that wouldn't let me do it automatically, so I had to call customer support. I still had all my old content ID and passwords and such, so I gave that to the call guy and he set me up with a new POL ID with my old characters reassigned to it. I was using a different credit card at this point, but I don't recall there being any issue switching it over.

I mostly play on my pc because it looks nicer, but my PS3 acts my portable FFXI machine when I want to play at a friends. Also is used when I dualbox my buddy's account. ^.^`

I have an 80 gig and it does not support ps2 games. I don't think even the 160 gig has the backwards compatibility. You are going to have to find an older model.

Yeah, both PS3 models currently in production don't have backwards compatibility. It's completely retarded.

I know that the PS3 does nothing special. But I also know that it handles upscaling on PS1/2 titles, and I have no idea whether or not the PS2 version of FFXI supports changing the ratio like the PC version does.

Actually the PS3 does a decent job of smoothing the game's textures when I run it on mine, but it still looks like shit due to the fact it's running in SD on a 48" TV and I refuse to buy any more versions of the game apart from the PC (I borrowed the PS2 discs from a friend but had to get the 2008 collection because PC WotG was fucking delayed by over a week and I didn't want to wait. Plus having the back up was handy at some points but I can't stand how crappy it looks and having no KB)

              1. SE has decided not to make a PS3 specific version. According to one interview they were trying to do it at one time but the Sony rep killed the deal.

              2. that is true. you need an old 80 gig, the 60 gig or the 20 gig to play FFXI since those are the backwards compatible models.

              3. Well like I said: It's based on the backwards compatibility and Sony is trying to kill all PS2 support on PS3 systems. Old 80 gigs are still pretty available if you look hard and get the right model number. Some players have reported that it looks terrible but I can't confirm because I have no hope of affording an HDTV anytime soon!

              4. sorry...no...it is what it is...

              5. yes. all you needed the disks for was just to install it and then it just boots off of the HDD.

No upscaling on FFXI. And it does look crappy on HDTV, I've twicked, I've poked, I've inverted everything and it still looks crappy. Only thing i found that will make it look decent...is by putting the "brightness" at low settings, then i can't see anything when it's night time. Spooky.

                  Re: FFXI on PS3

Upscaling depends on the game. MGS3 and Tomb Raider Anniversary look incredible when upscaled as do Persona 3, FFX and FFX-2 though with FFX you will have to mess around with the settings. For some reason FFXII doesn't upscale at all and will look like a mess in any HDTV which is a shame. In general most of your PS2 games will display better when upscaled though some games will appear stretched and distorted if it does not support wide screen.

The PS3 generally just smooths textures and the appearance for PS1 games. With the exception of FFVIII (which I haave yet to get work on my PS3 because mine reads FFVIII as a music CD), most will upscale. The PS3 also has a different RNG than that of the PS1 and PS2. the PS1 and PS2 would generate random numbers using the system clock so only a small range of numbers would be generated. The PS3 uses an actual algorithm when generating random numbers so your RPGs will be much more random as a result of played on a PS3. It's highly noticeable on FFV and FFVII. You can literally get random battles every other step and damage calculations seem much, much more random and give more varied results.

I dont know but i bought a 360 for the ffxi and for cod4 since those are the only games i play, but ffxi on the 360 looks awsome, cant wait to see what it looks like on a pc, but remember on the 360 you dont need a gold acount to play ff11, just silver and theres 2 new updated 360, jasper and valhalla that should be out soon, that will be more quieter and 3 rings free. But if youre after the ps3 for that and blue ray then, yeah, like every one sais, old moddel is a must.
