  • From Windurst to Valkrum Dunes: How? (and other newbie questions)

So, after a week of playing, I'm a level 15 BLM, so I think it's already time to head for Valkurm. However... I don't know how to go there! Windurst is isolated from the other two nations, so I don't think I can go there by foot, and of course I cannot use the airship yet.

Could you please tell me how to get there? I've looked at ffxiclopedia's maps, but I can't find a way. I think I could get to 18 without much problems around Windurst (in Tahrongi Canyon, basically), but I have to get the items for the SJ quest, and I don't think I'll have enough people to party with to help me get the Mhaura quest ones.

Also, after completing the series of quests that Selele (the new adventurers helping NPC in Windurst) assigned me, I got 3 free chocobo trial passes. The problem is... I don't know how to use them! I thought about talking to the NPCs in the chocobo stables, but no one seemed to want the passes. Could you tell me how to use them?

Finally, I'm lacking the spell Drain, and I've read you get it after a quest in San'Doria, but you need fame level 3 there to start it. Considering I'm still at level 2 in Windurst, is it worth the effort of raising San'Doria's fame, or I'd be better off paying for it in the AH? No one sels it in Windurst's AH, but from what I've read in FFXIAH, it's really pricy (20-30k, IIRC).

    Thanks in advance!

East Sarutabaruta > Meriphataud Mountains > Sauromugue Champaign > Jeuno (Set Home Point Here.) > Sauromugue Champaign > Rolanberry Fields > Pashhow Marshlands > Konschtat Highlands > Valkurm Dunes..... Or You can go to Mhaura and take the ship to Selbina. Mhaura > Selbina > Valkurm Dunes (Much faster than walking the whole way)

You probably have to trade it to them, however since you are under level 20 and don't have a chocobo liscence I believe the chocobo will only carry you to the end of the current zone and then it'll disappear in the next zone.

Quick Reputation - FFXIclopedia - a Wikia Gaming wiki this is a list of quests that can be done for quick fame, I used the "Only The Best" one to raise my Sandy Fame.
I'm not sure how much corn you'd have to buy to get fame 3 but I'm pretty sure it'd be less than 20k worth. After you get the fame, just do the quest.

Re: From Windurst to Valkrum Dunes: How? (and other newbie questions)

What Durahansolo said. Saru > Tahrongi > Buburimu > Mhaura > Selbina > Valkurm. Set your Home Point in Selbina, because it's a relatively long trip and your parties are going to be very upset when you die and end up back in Windurst.

The game provides various hints for adventurous people to get around. Buy the maps of the areas around the major nations and you'll have covered a very large part of the overworld. Using the Region Info map in conjunction with your current zone's map will give you a good idea of which zones connect with which. There's also usually paths and signposts along overworld zones that'll help keep you on the right track. I made my first trip to Jeuno using only the Region Info map and my zone maps, without consulting any one for help.

If you ever get lost you can resort to FFXIClopedia or FFXI-Atlas to view maps you don't have or to get a better idea of how the zones are connected. Many dungeons aren't marked on the overworld maps, and some have multiple entrances.

That aside, you're going to have to void plenty of potentially dangerous mobs along the way. Be sure to have a clear understanding of how enemies can aggro you (sight, sound, magic, and low HP). Dodging mobs is an essential skill for you to learn now - if you don't, you'll lose even more EXP at higher levels, and possibly get other people killed as well.

Re: From Windurst to Valkrum Dunes: How? (and other newbie questions)

You don't NEED to head to Valkurm. I went through there so many times with so many subs that I now avoid it on principle. ^.^`

If you wanted to continue leveling solo or with a partner, I'd reccomend going into the Maze of Shakrami and killing the worms there. They won't run after you, but their casting range is greater than yours and you have to be ever vigilant to avoid aggro. ^.^`It can be done, but it is difficult without a subjob. -,-'

FFXI-Atlas is a great resource. I refer to it often when looking for NM or traversing dungeons of which I have no map. In Tahrongi Canyon head to J-8 to get to Buburimu. In Bubu, follow the path east through the rocky area until you reach a fork where you will follow the south path to Mhaura. Take the ship there heading to Selbina (NOT the one heading to Al Zahbi). When the ship leaves, STAY DOWNSTAIRS. It doesn't always happen, but sometimes undead pirates will attack. If you are upstairs in the open, they will most certainly kill you. Once in Selbina, find a homepoint crystal to bind yourself.

As much as I hate the Dunes, if you do go there then you should stay until you hit 20 before making your way to Jueno. Again, follow the maps over at FFXI-Atlas from wherever you take off.

Once in Jueno, do the Chocobo License quest to make your travels that much faster. You need to be lvl 20 to start the quest, which is why I say wait until you hit 20 before leaving the Dunes. Also, lvl 20 groups are generally the earliest you can start xp'n in Qufim Island.

I found the best quest to do in Sandy for fame is the black tiger fang quest. I'm at work so I can't get to the site, but essentially you turn in 3-4 black tiger fangs at a time for fame and gil in Southern San'doria. I can't remember the exact reward, but if what you pay for the fangs are at the most what you would get for turning them in, then you get free and easy fame. If you pay less, you make money. ^.^`

Re: From Windurst to Valkrum Dunes: How? (and other newbie questions)

Depending on your characters level I would suggest doing some the Field of valour quests. One of teh books is just to the left of teh gate as you exit from windhurst waters, its a flouting book. for more information see guide here

Basically gives you a certain number of mobs of a class to fight, you kill tehm get their exp and on coompletion get bonus exp!!

With my guide to the new charcter quests TGM posted and these quests these days with signet and exp band, you can easily solo up to lvl 15 without the need for a party. In fact you still get 70 exp a mob in the starting zones at lvl 11!!!

Then you could easily get up to lvl 18 by fighting rarabs, mandys and sapplings in tahrongi canyon in the safe area where no goblins prowl. Once 18 you can then skill up on gobs, bees, yaguda right up to lvl 20 now. Then walk to jeuno, do chocobo quest, then you are free to choc anywhere and look for a sub job quest party.

Re: From Windurst to Valkrum Dunes: How? (and other newbie questions)

Thanks a lot everyone! Going to Mhaura and taking the ship looks like a reasonable trip... The Jeuno trip Durahansolo mentioned really scared me! xD

Regarding Drain, since Valkurm is near San'Doria, I'll use the time there to get some fame for it. I don't have 20k gil at the moment (new spells and equipment are expensive), so doing the quests will help me twofold, if I farm the items myself instead of buying them in the AH.

@Armando: I already have the maps for the three starting zones: I bought them along with the Giddeus map that I needed for mission 1-3. They are surprisingly cheap, so I didn't doubt about purchasing them.

@EternalMalachi: The problem is... I do need to go to the dunes, because I need to get the SJ quest items. From what I've read in FFXIclopedia, the monsters that drop those are all minimum level 18, so they'll be too tough for me to solo. I need to be in a party that (If I'm lucky) will help me get those items. Also, I want to get a taste on being in a party.

@TheGrandMom: Thanks for the info, although I already read the rules and most stickies... After all, I've been lurking for over 2 years! Still, I didn't know the Beginner Quests thread.

              Thank you everyone!

Re: From Windurst to Valkrum Dunes: How? (and other newbie questions)

There is also a Buburimu set of subjob quest items. Six months or so ago when I hit 18, Bubu was barely used, and I foolishly picked the Buburimu quest. FoV has changed things to where there are more people in Bubu, and the Nomad Moogles in Mhaura mean that people can switch to a higher level job quickly.

In either case, the third item in both quests drops from an undead, which normally only appear at night hours. Usually someone in your linkshell takes you to Gusgen mines and has you stand at the entrance while they try to farm it off the appropriate undead. Having fought both sorts of undead, I can say that the skull is a bit easier to get there than the bloody robes. You will need the Dem crag crystal for this, and I suggest you try to get all of the first three crystals as soon as you can so that people can teleport you around.

And watch out for those gobbies. My first (and only... I mostly soloed WHM to 30 before the XP increase last September) party in the dunes got me from 18 to 20. Then on the way back home, I got slapped down by a gobbie in Bubu. LEVEL DOWN!

At the very least don't go back through Buburimu at 2AM worn out tired from your first Dunes party.

Also, if you EVER look at the Conquest map and see a Windurst icon on Zulkheim, make it a priority to do that supplies quest. On Fairy, it always bounces back and forth between Bastok and Sandy, and the only week it was under Windurst since I started playing was before I knew to do this.

Re: From Windurst to Valkrum Dunes: How? (and other newbie questions)

                  At op;

The ship trip is only 100 gil. Do it. You can go on the upper deck, but if you see another ship approaching, hi-tail it to the lower decks and stay there till you reach selbina, aka 10 mins.

Stay in the dunes till 20, then go to jeuno and get the choco liscense.

                  ABOUT DRAIN

It's not that easy. Feel free to get the fame up to level 3, by doing quests. It make take about three days of questing, saying you play 4 hours a day, maybe more becuase your unfamiliar with the game, but you still won't get drain.

The guy who gives the quest, the npc, is in the prision of the chateaux. This is only accesable when you do the 2-3 mission from windy, which has you travel all over the place anyways. I say wait till your on 2-3, which is suggested to be 25 or higher solo'd. And then you go around everywhere and you will actually go to sandoria as part of the quest. You can do the quests, you will have more money by this time and will be more familiar with things, and you will be a higher level to blow thru some of the monsters when getting items for quests.

Again, its impossbile to get into the chateaux until your on the sandy part of the 2-3 quest. So no drain unless from ah, and when you CAN get it, just later, why buy it? It will be easy to get, just a coupla laters after you can actually use it, 25 or 20? You can get 5 lvls in one pt in qufim in 1 night, its not worth the 20-30k.

Btw, about quifim. After getting the subjob items, hitting 20, getting to jeuno, getting the choco quest done, head back to windy(or w/e to do the fame WHILE leveing another job) level another job, then go back to dunes, then at 20 again, go to qufim. Its in jeuno, and you can stay there till late 20's/30's. Then you can do adv jobs. And then the game just opens up to you.
