  • Just Started! First MMO! ^^

Okay, i just started. i'm alread lvl 10 warrior with full scale armor and a Great Sword. from what i've read, i'm gonna switch to Gaxe.

    I'm in Siren server.

one of my friends said (he's in siren too) that i should transfer to a busier server. what do you guys think?

also, any tips on what i should do now?

You picked up the "^^" fast (I learned it from FFXI anyway...).

Swapping to GA, good. Changing servers - shouldn't be needed. They all have their own quirks but I think they're all different shades of the same.

Good luck and welcome to Vana'diel!

      In order of Importance

      1. Have Fun
      2. Start saving and then selling all that stuff you get from the Mobs, If your inventory fills up, take the time to go back to town, sell stacks of stuff on the AH and if your AH inventory is full sell it to NPC's YOU WILL NEED GIL
      3. Level the other 5 jobs you have to Lvl 10 Once all your jobs are lvl 10, Lvl them all up to 20, then 30, and then 37...if you end up loving this game this will pay off in the long run, since you have war to 10 already do THF and MNK next....then do the mage jobs (if you hate mage jobs don't worry about them but odds are you'll eventually wanna play some sort of mage job... or not)
      4. once you get all your job's up to lvl 10, start heading to Valkrum dunes and then work on getting the 3 items for your subjob quest (Crab Apron, Damsel Fly, Magiked Skull)
      5. work on raising your fame

oh and what lmnop said Welcome to the game!

As of late, the more populous servers are kicking people out to balance out the smaller servers and they're not accepting new members lol. Start leveling Great Axe and Axe together, that way you'll have both of them capped for any situation.

Or you could create a mule character and use their AH spaces. Each extra character after your main character costs $1.00 extra per month. I have 2 Jeuno mules and in serious cases, I have my main character sell stuff at Jeuno's ah too so basically I have 21 sell slots. NPCing items is only good if they're worth NPCing or you are crafting and trying to break even.

For a whole lot of people, that's going to be a really quick way to burn out and take all the fun out of the game.

Friends are more important than a bigger population. If your friend is leaving Siren, follow him. If not, don't.

You can start doing some quests, probably the first mission or two for your nation, if you want. FFXIclopedia can help you find out which you can do right now. Maybe experiment with HELM (harvesting, excavation, logging, mining) or fishing to see if you'd like them as an income source.

Apart from that, just level, and keep your gear and skills up to date. Get through the Dunes, get your subjob, work on that. Explore, have fun, meet people. Ask questions.

There is no rush. If you're not willing to take your time, don't be surprised when no one wants to give you much of theirs.

I question levelling all jobs to 10 at first as well ... it's certainly helpful to have a sub ready once the subjob quest is finished, but beyond that, I think you might get more out of having that subjob slot unlocked for levelling more jobs.

You may or may not want to do this, it depends on whether or not you like the jobs you're playing.

I started out going with RDM as my main job, and leveled WHM and BLM for subs. I got to RDM 26, WHM 20, and BLM 15 and decided I wasn't really having a ton of fun with mage jobs. So then I went to 30 as WAR/MNK, and decided that DD was definitely the way for me to go. I unlocked a few subjobs, RNG, SAM, NIN, DRG, PLD, and discovered that I love RNG and SAM, and hate NIN. I'm up to RNG 46 now and loving every minute of it. At some point I went back and leveled THF to 15 just for treasure hunter. So in a round-about way I did take all of the starting jobs to 15, but it was more a means to an end than trying to figure out what I would have fun with.

If you read up a little on the different jobs, a few will appeal to you, and you should put in a little time and try them out. You'll find your calling and then you won't be frustrated at all that time you spend leveling 3 mage jobs to 30 when you'll never pick them up again, or 3 DD jobs if you prefer mage.
Meddle not in the affairs of dragons, for you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup.

If at first you don't succeed, skydiving is not for you.

Re: Just Started! First MMO! ^^

I think leveling to 10 is ok because you can solo to 10 and now with the XP updates, it should be even easier to solo to 10. After 10 you will probably want to party unless you have duo or trio partners depending on what jobs you are using or you are using a job that could solo on up. You'd definently burn out trying to level all the jobs to 37 in one shot because somewhere along the line you'll find a job you dislike. That would also burn a hole in your pocket if you were new, trying to buy armor pieces to use during all those levels. Only way around that would be to level sync your way to 37 on each job with only level 10-25 armor lol. A ls friend of mine did that, he dinged 37 in Qufim and partied only there and in Valkurm Dunes.

                        1. Try to find as much info about things you don't understand as you can. Read.
                        2. If you read and still didn't understand something, ask. Don't be ashamed to ask questions if you did your research.
                        3. Read this if you hadn't already.
                        4. Be VERY wary about guides that are more than 1 or 2 years old, especially if they're Job guides. They're likely to be outdated. This holds true for every job, but some more than others.

As for what you should do now: grab Signet, grab the most important gear you'll need for about the next 5 levels, pull up some maps online (you can use FFXI Atlas or FFXIClopedia - google them, I'm too lazy to link to them right now) and make your way to Valkurm Dunes. Do it alone - if you can't make it in one piece by yourself you're just going to get killed over there and in later zones. All you have to remember is to never cast Magic around bombs, weapons, and elementals (not a problem for you), never be anywhere near undead if your HP isn't white, you can run behind sight aggro mobs but you should steer clear of sound aggro mobs. Keep that in mind and you'll get there in one piece. Hint: If there's a sight aggro mob that could rip you to pieces in your way, wait for it to move before trying to sneak past it. For all you know it last moved 1 or 2 minutes ago and it could move and turn around as you try to go past it. Also, stop by whatever Crag is in your way and talk to the Telepoint.

Once you're at Valkurm, look for parties (don't shout, just put up for Seeking Party flag.) Valkurm Dunes has a lot of noobs and imbeciles, and high level players that are still noobs and imbeciles, so take anything you hear there with a grain of salt. And be wary of blind invites - if you didn't get a /tell with your invite, you probably don't want it.

You can stay in Valkurm until 20, which is why I said you should bring the gear you'll need for the next ~5 levels. Having outdated gear isn't very cool. You'll have to go back to town sooner or later at least once, but it's a long trip so you want to avoid having to go back every time a new piece of gear is available. Also, at level 18 you have to do the Sub Job quest, and for God's sake set your Home Point in Valkurm or Selbina when partying there because you WILL die and you don't want to be 20 minutes away from your party when you do.

About number 3, what Mhurron and Szkol said is very true. That one was definetly my prior experience's surfacing in my advice. Burning out is definetly no fun, take a break every once and awhile and play some Fallout3 or Left4Dead....or Ico.

And seriously do what feels good, if you start lvling BLM and you get to 4 and don't like it, by all means don't worry about it.

Eh. If they get it to 20 and don't like it, don't worry about it. No job has any gameplay to judge at level 4.
