  • so i was in a pt at the dunes...

    well i play as DRG14/WAR7

i was at the dunes and was going ok, than i was asked to tank...now i said ok to this, i have done more and more reading into it and the wiki says im not a tank, and some thread here say im not a tank, now what would be a good way to avoid this next time? just say "im not a tank"? i mean at that low level does it matter, they wanted me to tank b/c i had more hp and streghts, which leads me to...once more...im not a tank, i have ok def, there were 2 other war's in the pt and they were doin the damage dealer while i was stuck provoking everytime the mob targeted someone else, and when i wouldn't voke they'd get all pissed and tell me to voke

I would just say "No Thank You". I don't think DRG/WAR is a suitable Tank in that situation... Also, please check:

Just about any melee can tank in the dunes as long as you're not over hunting. Whether or not you want to tank is up to the player.

The two war's should have been asked to share tanking duties as well. As long as you are being treated fairly I say do what you can to help the party. If you ask that others help and no one steps up to the plate then you can gracefully bow out of the party if you feel strongly about it.

If you agreed to tank, and then you weren't provoking, they had every right to get upset (unless it was just a case of the timer not being up). Practically any melee job can tank in the Dunes as long as they've got respectable armor.

To avoid it next time, just say no. Make your case for someone with higher DEF, more hate-holding abilities, etc. tanking instead. Polite but firm. You can always leave.

Re: so i was in a pt at the dunes...

Honestly, there are two main things that tend to make for tanking capability at dunes level:
            1) Provoke JA (either WAR or /WAR)
            2) Reasonable def (wearing up to date gear)

If you were the only one sporting decent armor for your level, that might have been a reason for them to want you to tank. HP is also a consideration at that level; I've had more than a few parties at such a low level ask me not to tank because of being Tarutaru. OTOH, I tanked as a THF/WAR in some of my early dunes parties too. Depends on how scarce healing is, too. The more healers you have, the less risky things tend to be for a tank. Ideally a dunes-level party should have 3-4 people capable of casting Cure (or an equivalent such as Curing Waltz) and at least 1 person capable of casting Cure II. Note that I don't mean to suggest half your party or more should be dedicated healers, just that about that many should be able to pitch in on healing when things get rough.

To be honest, as a DRG at such low levels, you might want to sub WHM instead of WAR. You lose elemental breath attacks, but the healing breath is handy, you're strong enough to do well without it, and you can help contribute to the healing situation overall. DRG is one of few jobs without a native MP pool that can get away with subbing WHM, since it affects how their job works significantly.

Honestly, the strategies that can work in the dunes kinda work on different rules than xp at most levels due to the fact that the number of total abilities available and the differentiation between main and sub levels are so small. It's kind of funny, and kind of annoying, since this is supposed by the community to be where you would learn how to do things "right", but a lot of things work just as well or better here that would be insane to do at higher levels. Which makes it very difficult to discuss dunes strategy clearly, since not only are there those who think about all xp in terms of meripo to contradict you, but also those who don't want you to get 'bad ideas' of what xp is like...
