  • Q about playing ffx1

well i bought the game from ebgames online, and downloaded it, took about a hour to download the 4gigbs. after that it spent 2 hrs installing it. than it said it had to upgrade the play online thing, that took 30 mins to download and another 30 to install, and now i am finally getting to the "play" section, i didnt have a contenxt ID, so i get one...i hit play and now it says its havng to update ffxi, so i spent 30 min downloading the update, and now i wait another 2.5hrs for it to install, is this normal? i mean i love FF but damn, this is rediculous i wanted to play this game 3.5hrs ago... by the time i get to play i will have to be at work...wanted to know if its norma to have to do these updates all the time, and since i bought the 08 collection...do i have to do this for each expansion?

The Collection only accounts for so much data, there's a lot of things that have been adjusted and changed about the game since the most recent expansion came out. It ranges from changes to old and new content.

The first update is always going to be the hardest to get through.

Shouldn't be any more downloads save for future updates to FFXI and POL, which happen on occasion.

I have to rush to work now myself, but I'll say this, expect something quite different from other FF games. Things take time in FFXI, but the last update that came out made this game more beginner-friendly than ever.

Ya, reading manuals is for pussies.

Maybe if you read the controls section in the manual. All that time you were waiting for the update and upset about it, and you could have been looking over the manual.

I'll give you this one just cuz i'm a nice guy (sometimes). It is the "-" key on the numberpad for menu, and there is a Log Off and Shutdown menu on there, press up, down, left, and right to navigate the menu as in any other menu (oh look! another freebie! i'm generous today I guess) to select these options.

I'm not sure if it shows this in the latest manual, but /logoff and /shutdown are the shortcut for it.

Well, it IS different to other FF games as said previously. Don't let it overwhelm you and just explore.

But to equip a weapon, you need to bring up the menu and go to ... Equipment. Like every other FF game, basically.

Then how are you moving your character? IIRC, unless you change it in the menu, the numberpad is moving characters.

Either way, don't you have a numberpad Function key or something like most laptops?

If you're using a controller, you set one of the keys to the menu in the controller options like ever other key.

Moving using the mouse? I'd recommend buying a pad. The 360 pads work well as do other ones similar to that or a PS2 style pad.

Leave the keyboard to talking and the mouse well alone.

If you have a PS3 controller, there's a utility you can download to use your PS3 Controller via USB Cable to play with on your laptop. I found the controller easier to use for me since I had gotten used to playing on 360 before I bought it for PC.
