  • New location, new problems

Well, I've been on FFXI for a while, and I haven't run into any issues. Then I left sunny CA to go visit blazingly hot AZ to visit my sister's place. Anyways, while I have Time Warner Cable, she has Cox. And ever since I started using Cox, I've been unable to connect to POL, getting a POL-1160 error at the "Checking Playonline Viewer Version". The error pops up after about a minute of being unable to connect.

I've attempted to call Cox's technical support, but they can't tell what the problem is. So, my question is simply this. "What the hell is wrong?! "

It's hard to say. You might put up some information about your sister's network(with her permission of course....). Things like a router or firewalls or maybe the type of connection it is. You might even post up what you are using to play the game on. PC perhaps?

It would behoove you to do the legwork on your problem and ask the correct questions. Simply asking "What the hell is wrong?!" is bound to get you answers that you don't want. For instance, someone may reply that your connection is constipated....

Yeah, sorry bout that. I was kinda pissed off last night, and I posted the question before going to sleep. Anyways, the OS is Windows XP SP2, there's no router, and I'm sure I've stated that it's a cable connection.

Did you take your PC along with you or did you install FFXI on her computer?

I took my laptop along with me, so it's not a firewall issue. Anyways, I talked to my ISP today and they said they block ports 25 and 80. Which are two of the ports POL uses. Are there any workarounds?

If your sisters' ISP is port blocking, there are really no reliable workarounds that will afford you the bandwidth that your looking for. Don't hope for help from your sisters' ISP. I can pretty much say with all certainty that you'll have better luck getting your sister to switch providers than you will of having them open ports for you.

I wish there were better news. You might have to suck it up and live w/o FF for a bit.

Yeah, I figured that. Oh well, two weeks without FF'll be good for me. Thanks anyways.

I have Cox cable internet in FL and play without issues, so this could be a region specific thing. Maybe the Beastmen have control of AZ right now and it will change with the next Conquest update. >.>

They block HOSTING services on the customers end, they don't block ACCESSING services on other networks over any port.

80 is standard HTTP. Are you using any website?

FYI, most people never have to open ports on a firewall to access FFXI.
I use a Mac because I'm just better than you are.

HTTP Error 418 - I'm A Teapot - The resulting entity body MAY be short and stout.

Only sites I can't load are megaupload and rapidshare really, which is understandable from their standpoint somewhat. All other sites load fine, albeit this one loads insanely slow per usual.

Well, I'm in Vegas now, and I'm still getting the same issue. Maybe it isn't server-side, despite what SE says. My firewall is configured to allow the program, so I know that isn't the problem. Could it be something else?

Yet again a new location. Legwork my good man, legwork.

I recommend this only for troubleshooting purposes...and only briefly. Under "Services", find the windows firewall. Right click it and select "properties". Select "start-up type" to disabled. Reboot. Check connectivity. (Don't forget to turn that back on.....) ...well, that's for windows. If your using a different firewall, do the same disable for startup and repeat the above.

No, I'm only running Iolo Anti-Virus/Firewall. And I've tried that already, but no dice. This is really frustrating

Ok, update. I've installed and gotten POL to work on another computer, meaning this computer is to blame. I've since uninstalled my firewall/anti-virus for now, done a system restore, and fiddled around with some settings in Internet Options, and I'm still having issues. Any other possible causes?
