Invert mouse & best visual quality settings

Hi all,

Im new to FF XI (however not new to the FF series) and i have a few questions regarding the performance of the game.

Firstly I find the mouse setting uneasy personally. I'd prefer that if I have the mouse up, the pointer moves up and mouse down = the pointer to move down. Is there any way to invert the curser?

Secondly, I have fiddled with the FFXI config but it isnt clear which tick boxes/options I should use of best quality (I have a high spec laptop so I know its capable with all visuals maxed out). The gaphics look ok, but some of the screenies I been looking at in the forum look more crisp and sharp.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I am considering to play this game as my main PC game since I have given up on the WoW community of kids.

Do you mean that your pointer movement is reversed in game or are you talking about how the camera moves when your pointer is at the edge of the screen? If it's the latter, you can invert it in the Config > Mouse/Cam menu in game.

Thank you both for your replies. The graphics config links helped me alot.

However I have come to a conclusion I need a gamepad for this game. Dont think Square Enix put enough time to completely revamp the PC control movement to use a mouse and keyboard effectively - seems more like a complete port of a console.

I agree that using the mouse sucks, but seriously, you'd barely even need it anyways. I play the game without even touching the mouse except to navigate the PoL viewer.

I think most people abandon the mouse completely and just go with the keyboard. It's all you really need. Buying a controller definitely isn't a bad idea though.

Thanks for more replies. Guess I will try not using the mouse until I get myself a gamepad. However I am playing using a notebook, is there anyway to use WASD controls without having the command window pop-up?

Sorry for such stupid questions but Im struggling getting to grips with FFXI after playing WoW for over 2 years .

QFT. The mouse controls in FFXI are very much useless. The only good use it has is picking out a target from a crowd.

The keyboard, on the other hand, is THE BEST.

I believe it's under the control options somewhere, but you can switch your keyboard settings to laptop or something. It's what I did so I don't have to move using the numpad.

You're looking for the "Compact" keyboard option in the in-game config menu. This gives you WASD movement and changes the way commands work so that letter keys (can) work as controls instead of bringing up the chat bar; the chat bar comes up when you type a space or slash, or use one of the chat shortcuts (Ctrl-R for reply, Ctrl-P for party, etc.).

Search function is your friend. Search > Compact Keyboard or Laptop Keyboard > http://www.ffxionline.com/forums/fre...-keybored.html >

Open your Main Menu
Go into Config
Go into the MISC (1 or 2, I don't remember)
For Keyboard function, choose Compact
You'll see a list of keys.

Move keys are: AWSD
Camera keys are: Arrow keys

You can change your keys to whatever you want. I changed my Main Menu key to O, and my Items to I and my equipment to E

Main menu opens just by hitting the O button. I and E with CTRL.

How to use your macros are with CTRL and ALT (as regular)

Talking in chat window is spacebar or by hitting /

How to choose yourself is F7 (or F1)

Enemies are F8 (this includes NPCs also I believe).
