  • A Couple Questions

    Hey everyone.

I'm sort of new to the game, in a way. I started off when the game first came out, leveled to around 12 or so and stopped. There was just too much to do and I couldn't focus on enjoying the game.

A year or two later, a few friends got me into World of Warcraft and leveled up pretty easily and quickly. There is a certain bias about FFXI from players in that game, but I've always wanted to go back to it. The world was immersive, the characters and monsters more intriguing. At any rate. I finally have a chance now to play FFXI again, but I have a few quick questions before testing the water:

What's the best way to level up through the game? I had alot of trouble crunching through monsters in the areas. There must be another way? Quests? Missions?

What's a good way to get money? Any particular jobs/professions?

A good starter job? I had a warrior for starters. I also hear there are sub-jobs you can have, so.. yeah.. I return still a "noobie" for FFXI, and wanting to play more.

Hope these questions don't sound retarded though. At any rate, thanks!

    Re: A Couple Questions

Partying and killing things are really the only way to level up at any decent rate. However, later on, Campaign (massive battle missions in the past) and Besieged (massive battle quest in the Near East) do become popular ways, though they are slower.

Thief/Anything or Anything/Thief is always a good way to make money, and even without Thief you can make some decent money just straight farming, if you know where and what to kill. Thief would favor their Treasure Hunter ability (more drops) but some jobs could potentially kill things faster to make up the difference. That mostly depends on what you're hunting though.

You could also raise chocobos (though the market has dropped since the initial release), do some gardening (which takes some significant research and time to get what you want), or take up a craft (which requires a large investment in any craft to reach a skill level that would start making money).

WAR is a good starter job, but I (and many here) will suggest to try out all the jobs and find what works for you. Unlike WoW, you don't have a set job, but can change your job and subjob as often as you want without any penalties. If you level a job to 60, you can switch to a level 5 job, take it to 10, and then switch back to your 60 job. When you hit 30, you can unlock all the advanced jobs, and from there you have a LOT more choices open to you.

You level by killing mobs. Check them before you engage. Killing faster on easy prey and decent challenge is safer than trying your luck for even matches and above. I know my son likes to go out and get exp as fast as possible because he wants to level RIGHT NOW...but thats not how FFXI works. It's slower and takes a LOT more patience than WoW does.

For money, collect your drops and know what stuff sells for by checking the auction house. Knowing whats selling for a decent price that you can go kill, helps fill your pockets with gil. http://www.ffxionline.com/forums/new...ing-guide.html

Warrior is a great starting job. Mage jobs are a bit harder to solo and therefore more frustrating. Monk is also another great starting job. Since you can change to whatever you'd like, try a few out and see what fits you best. I disagree with leveling thf as a new player. Thf isn't really wanted in parties in lower levels and solo'ing on thf can be frustrating. I'd stick with War or Mnk for a melee type job. If you really want to level a mage first, go with Red Mage.

Sub jobs start at level 18 after you do a quest to open them. So actually switching between jobs and leveling like both War and Mnk is a good idea. Then when you get your sub job open you can be a War/Mnk or Mnk/War. Please keep your subjob leveled. It's hard enough getting parties but people that have War20/Mnk5 are much less likely to get a party than someone with War20/Mnk10. (Your subjob is always 1/2 of your main jobs level.)
