Re: Some Questions Before I Get Back In

You're thinking WoW hun. FFXI doesnt have kill quests. The easiest quest I can think of is killing mandragora and trading in cornettes, If you could consider that a drop quest.

You think killing the same creature over and over for 5 lvls is less boring than running around an entire zone doing quests with stories behindthem, and rewards for them?
I think they would be equally boring, if the story is thin and if soloing.

FFXI's quests do not give experiences points in general, but many of them have interesting stories; I tend to view earning those stories as my reward for doing quests.

As for exp'ing, the fact that one is nearly forced to join an exp party makes exp'ing less boring, IMO, but it is a double edged sword--waiting for enough people to form a party can be quite dull. Though, I often use the time to read books or run around doing quest, so it's not all bad.

I don't enjoying soloing much, but, yes, many jobs can solo for experience point to varying degrees, and I've tried soloing on a quite a few of them--which is why I know I don't enjoy soloing--kept falling asleep. If a quest after quest boil down to "Go kill X number of this and you get Y amount of exp and Z amount money", I can do that already soloing, sans the yawning quests.

In fact, that was what I was doing two nights ago, except I was more interested in money than experience points--but completed a merit point (from getting "limit points"--a different form of "experience points") out of it anyway from farming "Easy Prey" monsters. Money and exp, without any quest.

When it come down to it, exp'ing is a time sink. FFXI does it in groups for the most part, though not exclusively. WoW supposedly does it solo, with some thinly storied quests (plus that resting for exp thingie). Both are time sinks. If you want WoW style exp'ing, you'll be better off playing that game. If you want more human interactions, FFXI is for you.

If you want both... Er... Play WoW while waiting for party in FFXI?! Maybe?

Re: Some Questions Before I Get Back In

I guess it the end it really doesn't matter what I want, but it does help if I get an idea of what the game is like. It just seemed like lvling was a bit more mindless than in other games I've played, and I recall when I did play finding a party could be a pain. But if my group of friends all decide to play that shouldn't be much of an issue. The main reason I'm considering getting back into FF is the players seemed much more polite than say in wow, I hope that hasn't changed?

Nope we are all still very polite. But yes you will get the one person who is just a punk and not polite at all. I have found that many people are nice enough and willing to help new people get acclamated to the game.
Thank you very much to Selphiie for this sig!

Now if only SE would make it easier for new people to try out the game...
