Re: Help, Character textures are messed up

Glad you got the download and managed to get it working. Best news is that Okkur was there to help as I would have been lost looking for specific files, which is why I deleted out my drivers and then ran the setup.exe that is in the driver package.

Running the setup without a delete won't work as there is a newer version of the driver already installed. With the driver deleted the machine will go to a default VGA driver (ick) until you install the driver. I downloaded a copy of the latest driver from the Dell site before doing it to my machine though, just in case.

You don't need winzip or winrar to extract the files, Windows comes with a zip extraction utility so just open it and select extract all and choose a memorable place to put it.

Only issue I have is that I find PlayOnline will occasionally (about 4 time so far and I'm on most days) stop working under Vista, which I didn't get under XP. And you don't need Windower anymore, unless you want the party TP meter display or some other add-in. There's been an option on the first screen of the FFXI Config since the WotG update to Start in Windowed Mode.

Re: Help, Character textures are messed up

This happened to me when FFXI stopped working for me (For some reason, Idk, it just STOPPED working with Windower, and when I tried it Fullscreen and when I tried SE Windower, so I downloaded updated graphics card drivers, and it worked, but characters had the same shimmering effect.

Sadly, it works just fine on XP on the same comp (I dual boot). I only had to upgrade for Vista... I didn't even have to touch my drivers on the XP Partition.

Re: Help, Character textures are messed up

          Couple of options.

Download the driver package from the link on my email on the first page of this thread, unzip and follow the instructions from the other link on the same mail. This worked for me, will sort out your low resolution problems and let you play ffxi. You do have to follow the instructions, part of which will ask you where the driver is and you will need to direct it to where you unzipped the package. If you have problems downloading send me a post and I'll get back to you as soon as possible (the folder it was in was password protected at one point, should be sorted now but bear in mind I'm on UK time and answer mails in the eneving).

Your other option is to download the display driver for your machine from the manufacturers website and run the setup.exe. This is much easier as it will run on you machine and do everything for you and get your graphics back to normal, but will still leave you with problems in ffxi.

Or download both and keep trying to get the ffxi ones working.

Re: Help, Character textures are messed up

I did a scan of "Can You RuN it?" site and I seem to pass with flying colors except my Intel 965 chipset...

So, If I do what this topic says, I should be fine? & does FFXI work with dial up? (I will do the file updates on my brother's high speed net when need be but he is 20 miles away from me, I just have dial up). So, will I be good to go?

Re: Help, Character textures are messed up

A 965 can run FFXI fine, a Mobile should be able to as well

              FFXI works 'fine' on dialup.

Re: Help, Character textures are messed up

Alright, I bought the game, after years of downloading the expansions/updates. I'm good to go, I also had this problem with my characters, but did the driver thingy and ta-da, I'm in business! I'm using a Compaq Presario C700 with Intel 965 Chip. It's not the best but it works! I'm so happy right now, once I get better net I'll hook up my 360 for this. Character is on Valefor. Name is Fatalyzt. Check me out... Level 5 already. Hume/Warrior.

I got the same thing happening to my Toshiba Satellite L300-16L with Intel 965 Express Chipset I have tried all options listed here including the non-validated work-around link when, in the step in the walkthough that says it should be successful I get "windows has determined you have the newest updated driver blahdeeblah message" instead. I got the zip file the walkthrough is a tad to techy for me to understand clearly.
I am playing on my 360 on Shiva server name is Foley send me a message if you can help

Re: Help, Character textures are messed up

If the older (ffxi compatible) driver won't load then it's likely that you still have a newer driver installed. You will need to uninstall it first. Before you do this make sure you download a copy of the latest video driver for your machine from the manufactuer's support website, just in case the old driver doesn't work and you need to reinstall the recommended one. Save it to a location you can remember and it would be best to keep it even if this does work.

When you delete your video driver the machine should revert to a standard VGA driver. This looks a bit blocky but will let you use the machine. Don't worry the display will go back to normal when you install the ffxi compatible driver (or the one you got when you did the above). You will also find that Windows Update will recommend that you install the latest driver but (assuming this works) you can decline the update and hide it so that you don't get bugged all the time. May be worth turning off automatic updates whilst you do this to stop it getting in the way, but turn them back on when you're done.

Now the fun bit. You need to get to the device manager. Depending if you have XP or Vista this can be a bit hard to find, but you need Control Panel, System, Device Manager. Click on Display Adaptors, right click Mobile Intel(R) 965 Express Chipset Family and select Properties. Go to the Driver tabd and select Uninstall. When this is done you will be prompted to reboot and when you get back you will have old style chunky graphics on screen. Now you can follow the rest of the notes to install the ffxi compatible driver.

Good luck, and if you can't get it to work install the machine specific driver you downloaded earlier or turn on windows updates and let it find the driver youneed.

Re: Help, Character textures are messed up

I have a Dell Inspiron 1525, Vista Home Premium 32-bit with a Mobile Intel(R) 965 Express chipset, which has no official custom drivers which are older than the ones which came installed on the machine.

Each manufacturor has a custom version of video drivers, which is why you can't install them cross machines (they are only validated for a few models). The one which I put up for download is the Intel release of the previous version of the drivers (at least previous version compared to what I had). The Intel driver isn't customised so it can be loaded on any machine but you will be stepping back to a previous version and will loose any tweaks your computer manufacturer added. However, this isn't really a problem as it's exactly what you want to do to be able to play FFXI and your non-game display will be just fine.

As I said in the previous mail, make sure you have a copy of the original driver just in case. That way if the older driver doesn't work you can reinstall the original driver - no ffxi but at least your computer will work. If you have real problems reboot the machine in safe mode (press the Fn key it tell you to in the machines guide while starting up) and install the drivers from there. Absolute worst case scenario, as it's a new machine you should have the install disks to be able to restore everything back to initial configuration (back up everything important before you start - files you have created only not programs you have the disks for) but it really shouldn't get that bad. If you confirm you have the Express 965 chipset the old drivers should be just fine.

My buddy has the same drivers except his OS is 64bit.
We've been having troubles getting his stuff to work for him since 64bit is a nazi about updating Anything. Got any ideas?

Re: Help, Character textures are messed up

Soory no. The drivers I put up are for 32-bit Vista. From what I'm aware of 64-bit Vista there are quite a number of devices which still do not have compatible drivers (but don't quote me on that as when it comes to pc operating systems I'm a user rather than an enthusiast/expert).

If there is a compatible 64-bit version out there it may be quite difficult to find as the Intel site only seems to carry the latest and latest - 1 versions of the 32-bit drivers. It may be worth seeking out some of the 64-bit Vista user groups as I believe there are some brilliant people out there who do adapt 32-bit drivers to work.

Would love to be more help...

Hi guys. im have the same laptop inspiron 1525 and have tried all the above methods. sadly none have worked. i downloaded bronnies file and the file i needed wasnt in there. i d/l the opensource file and same. i d/l the intel one and same. everytime i install drive all i get is either: this driver isnt validated so get lost, or driver is current to what im updating with. Am i missing something? seems like everyone has had the problem solved xcept me. also when i straight uninstall the driver there is no longer a display item in device manager. when i restart windows gets the driver for me and i have no way to stop it.. anyone have other ideas for me? i dont plan to get another laptop just to play this.....
