Look here, for one. Read the manual that comes with the game too, and do lots of reading on this site and others. FFXI has a steep learning curve, do a lot of reading on the internet, and a lot of practice. Be sure to have signet cast on you (talk to the guys outside the exits of your city, the gaurds, one of them will ask if you want SIGNET cast on you, this will cause crystals to drop, when you collect 12 of 'em sell 'em at the auction house, and be sure to use the SORT button when in your inventory so your inventory won't run out)

Look here, for one.

Arg. Why are you sending people there? Those guides look very dated, and it's a really incomplete collection. (The Paladin guide there wasn't even updated for Shield Mastery. Geez.)
