Re: Game Wont Run PLEASE HELP

I did a little digging and the "Salmon" ASUStek board is actually the ASUS K8S-LA, which apparently was an OEM board that ASUS made for HP (Hewlett-Packard) a few years ago.

I dug a little deeper and found this spec sheet on that motherboard:
              http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/g...name=c00257657

              The important line:

Graphics connector (AGP): 1 AGP 8x
So, in conclusion, any AGP 8x graphics card will work with this board.

I know for a fact you have an HP, since that's the only brand that has ever used that motherboard.

"Salmon" is the codename for your motherboard. It's not a graphics card. See StarvingArtist's post above for advice on what to get.

Re: Game Wont Run PLEASE HELP

If you only need to support FFXI, then you have a fair bit of leeway. You'll want to make sure you get an ATI Radeon or nVidia GeForce card. For the low end of capacity, you can either use an old high-end card (clearance prices ftw) or a new low-end card.

                      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Compari...ocessing_Units

                      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Compari...ocessing_Units

Big table of a lot of cards. For the nVidia list, anything from GeForce 4 Series table on, and for the ATI list, anything from the Radeon R200 table on should be okay, but beware of poor performance from cards that are both low-spec and old. The Radeon 8500 is good. The Radeon 9000 and 9200, not so much... You're looking for anything with a Bus Interface of AGP. My rather limited testing suggests that Fill Rate probably has a rather significant impact for FFXI, but I can't say for sure how everything stacks up.

I got my Radeon 8500 on clearance and as OEM packaging (no software bundles, etc.) for $65 a few years ago, so it's not that expensive if you can find the right deal. It performs a fair bit better than the more ubiquitous GeForce FX 5200. I also got a used GeForce 4 MX 420 pretty cheaply and it does well also. So if you can find a used card with high specs, that may work best.

If not, I suspect you can get tolerable performance out of a low-end GeForce 7 or 8 card. Pay attention to which card is which on this; close numbers tend to indicate cards that came out at the same time, not cards of similar capabilities; the differences between a GeForce 7900, 7600, and 7300, or between an 8600 and an 8500, may warrant a price tag difference of $50 or more.

I'd say if you do a bit of research and shopping around, you ought to be able to get a marginally acceptable card for FFXI for about $30-$40, maybe less, and a fairly good card for around $70-$100.

Edit: Okay, since that was a fair bit of info dump... don't feel you need to look through and understand or memorize anything from that table. Rather, when you find a card, look it up in the table, compare it to others you've seen, see if it seems worth the price. I generally bring a printout of whichever list is relevant when I go shopping for video cards.

Best Buy, Circuit City, etc. tend to overcharge for this kind of thing, in my experience. Ordering online or buying from an actual computer parts store (check the yellow pages for your area) may save you some money.

Re: Game Wont Run PLEASE HELP

ATI cards work better in FFXI then nVidia for the time being.

The 9550 will run the game at 1024x768 but if you can find a X1600 AGP, it will handle it better.

                            For instance an X1600 for $50 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...2E16814102666R
I use a Mac because I'm just better than you are.

HTTP Error 418 - I'm A Teapot - The resulting entity body MAY be short and stout.

Re: Game Wont Run PLEASE HELP

The 9550 you posted in the first link looks to be both low-end and old. It'd perform substantially poorer than e.g. the 8500. You could do a lot better for that price tag.

The X1050, OTOH, looks decent. I still think $100 is high for it, but it'd probably meet your needs.

However, I got an nVidia GeForce 7600 GT KO, a far more recent and powerful card, for about $110 at a local computer parts store. I think if you look around more you can find a much better deal than that X1050. I would say though that if you could find the X1050 for closer to $60-$70, it might be worthwhile.
