IfritnoItazura's advice will help you loads. Definitely saves time trawling round the npcs every time you get a fame level. I did it how you are describing the first couple of times, it takes forever.

Fame and quests in ffxi actually make a lot of sense once you twig to how fame and quests work.

Your fame in a particular place is a measure of how well known you are among the local townspeople (i.e the npcs). Missions are what you do for your government (which ordinary townspeople would generally not hear about), quests are you helping out people in the town.

When you start out, with level 1 fame, the npcs haven't heard of you because you haven't done any deeds they have heard about so they won't trust you with anything very important. You could be level 75 and rank 10 but that doesn't matter.

As you do quests and become more famous more npcs will start to trust you to help them with more important tasks (i.e you get access to more quests) because they have heard of the work you have done helping other people in the town.

So your fame and access to quests is mostly (few exceptions that require a minimum level as well as a minimum fame level) independent of your job level and your mission rank.

Re: Question about quests and levels

I see, makes a lot more sense now. Quests should just be once in a while thing, and missions are WoW's equlivant of quests, gotcha.

Ok last question. So now I got about 12 quests in and one missions, but according to FFXIclopedia that missions suggested level is 10, and I'm level 1, so what should I be doing? Don't think, and hope not, just killing mobs all the way to level 10. Just do all the quests?

With only a few exceptions, no there is not a way to cancel most quest without completing them. Some are repeatable as well and will forever be in your quest log.

And someone please answer my main question about questing; do I have to go around the whole town talking to NPCs again every few levels to see if new quests opened up to me?
Quest are not level based for the most part. Some have a level 10 requirement as RMT use to exploit them, now they have to at least level a little bit before getting the quest item. Most quest are fame dependent or rank/storyline dependant.

For example, some quest require level 6 fame, not job level, but fame level. So once you've done enough quest to achieve level 6 fame you'll be able to unlock the quest.

Quest are something many people do to either acquire a certain item, or to pass away time. Personally I have a checklist of all the quest than I'm trying to complete solely for the sake of completness. Some are for maps, or a short cut to getting certain places. I've rarly ever had to seek out certain quest, I just talk to random NPCs as I pass them.

Double posting I know, but got drawn away while typing last response. The mission will be there till you complete it. You're not on a time schedule. Just go out and start leveling up, and once you're level 10 (or higher) go back and do the mission.

Missions, in and of themselves, are not required. Though some people will question a level 75 character that is rank 1. Key milestones are rank3 due to the dragon fight, rank 5 where you get your airship pass, and rank 6 when you'll be able to participate in dynamis (also requires level 65+, and often suggested to be level 70 to 75).

Rank 3 around level 25 is pretty good, rank 5 in your 40s, and rank 6 anytime around level 50 are the levels most people do them.

In addition there is storyline missions to do. Zilart mission (ZM) are available after rank 6. ZM gives you ultimatly sky access, and endgame zone. Chains of Promathia leads to sea acces, and you can start on the first set of missions at level 30. CoP is considered a tougher set of missions than ZM, and requires most people months (if not years) to complete.

Certainly don't be hampered by all the quest and such you'll have to do. Poke around www.ffxiclopedia.com and read around on the various missions (City, AM, CoP, and ToAU) to have an idea where you'll be going as you progress in the game. Quest when you'd sick of leveling for a day or two. And level various other jobs that you might be interested in.

One last thing, there is a quest you'll want to do at around level 18-20 (available at 18) is the subjob quest. It will require 3 items, two of which you'll probably get in exp parties. One you may need some help, and chat with people in your parties if they'd be willing to help after an exp session if they happen to have a higher level job.

Also, what server are you on?
