  • How do you avoid a mob that has true hearing?

I've never seen the answer to this anywhere, so I'm curious. Last night I got some aggro while trying to get a staging point. Soulflayer is True Sight and True Hearing according to the Vana'diel Atlas site. Luckily I had SS and Blink up, but that doesn't really help since I needed to warp out of there. I'm a good RDM but I can't solo an IT++, especially surrounded by tons of other IT mobs that would probably aggro/link.

So even though I had Sneak and Invis up, and I waited till Soulflayer's back was turned before I ran by him, how do I avoid him with his True Hearing ability? I wasn't too close to him, but is it just a distance thing? How will I know?

I really want to get this staging point done, but I was absolutely nowhere near a zone and I'm not exactly capable of surviving an IT++ link train to the zone.

    So what's the secret?

yes, it's a distance thing. It's more about timing and running far enough away. Anyone who's ever tried to run past jormy knows what i'm talking about.

My advice, find a place with a sound aggro mob that you can easily zone away from, and practice running around it, maybe Rancor den or such.

EDIT: btw, don't underestimate your abilities to survive trains. I saw a red mage who managed to train about 20 weapons from Zitah ro HOTG by using Stoneskin+Blink+Ghetto Convert without dying. Of course, since I had to stand at the fountain and watch him, I wasn't so lucky... but you get my point.

Sorry I'm no help here to answer your question. I just summon Carbuncle and run like mad. T_T.

lol, that's something I would be curious about. Something to answer how I've walked passed other mobs that aggro by sound without aggroing.

If you want my guess on how I avoided my aggro with sound mobs is that there is a distance difference if you walk vs. run. So if you walk past the mob you have more leway to sneak past then if you run. Yes, I do goof around walking a lot. I enjoy taking strolls past mobs that could rip me to shreds...

Here's what helped several people through, that I recall witnessing.

            I avoid the situation!

I dunno, I'm a NIN and THF, so I can run as fast as I can from it. lol

            Honestly though, I don't know.

Re: How do you avoid a mob that has true hearing?

There are times that I believe SE hacks in and spys on me just to see what I'm thinking. When I was collecting the staging points I was strolling around with sneak/invis looking around. I went right up to the soulflayer, took a screenshot, /poked it a few times and continued on my way.

Like the system checks int vs int, mnd vs mnd, and the such, I think they check IQ vs IQ. >.>;; I must of checked too weak and he left me alone <.<

That, or it was just glitchy or a fluke. I was /nin, so maybe stealth job trait kicked in? You could try subbing smn for a pet, but it won't last but maybe 1 hit, or be very patient and wait for a chance to run past it. Now when I need to go somewhere, I sub thf and just flee there.

Hmm, maybe that is a glitch. I'll ask Akosygin about it.

All right, so that's the problem. I was running, so he started casting Thunder IV on me. shadows! I warped because I did not know how far I could make it with him on my tail.

I will try again tomorrow maybe.

What staging point were you going after? I got all my staging points and I never saw a soulflayer until one ended up being a boss on nyzul isle assault.

Unless there are 7 staging points now...

They added Soulflayers, and by the same extention Puronguros(the frog mage thingies) after ToAU was out for a while and many people got their points. But to get the points now you have to pass these guys, both of whom are True sight/hearing aggro. Personally, I had a lot of practice with things like this as 1) I'm cheap and will only use oils when I have to (if I'm soloing or something, in pts I burn through them like crazy) and 2) I've done *countless* promy runs, and those are nothing but true hearing aggro mobs.

Only way past them is skill and luck. Though nin sub might help.
