Re: How do you avoid a mob that has true hearing?

Hmm, I wonder how many people I would need to bring with me to kill one instead of trying to blindly run past him.

I thought it couldn't get any harder than True Sight, now they have to go and add True Hearing. Seriously, how the hell is that fair? {Bastard Sword}s.

Ghetto Convert? I assume you mean using Convert for the opposite reason it's usually used for. As in getting more HP. That's so funny, I'll have to remember that one.

Re: How do you avoid a mob that has true hearing?

I did that run solo once before and Ill tell you how I did it.

#1 I got lucky and found a group by the locked door you need a key for and waited for them to open it.

#2 Those mindflayers hang out in areas with tons of clearance to walk around them. You can always wait for them to look off to the side or something and there arent that many of them.

#3 In the end of the walk to Ilrusi atoll you will have to go through a small tunnel filled with true sight Imps. You can also just watch them and walk by them carefully there is enouph room.

#4 If you want to make this really easy just bring a hermes quencher, its flee in a bottle and at lvl 75 it lasts almost a minute. Thats how I got past the Imps though I dont think I really needed it cuz the tunnel is short. But Imps cast Blm spells so short can be long with them.

Re: How do you avoid a mob that has true hearing?

To kill them you'd need at least 4 high lvls. While getting the points for some friends one of them aggroed the Flayer. There was only about 2-3 75s with us, a whm and rdm most notably, and about 4-5 50-60+ melees and other mages. We lost about two people in the fight and it took a while to win, but we were able too. Sticking silence really helps against these things, but it's not easy to do.

But I'll agree with NicasinXS in that they hang out in fairly wide open areas. At worst you'll only have to get past two so it's best to just wait them out. And again, subbing nin will help to cut down on your sound aggro range, even if only by a small amount. Though you will lose out on CS+Warp.

on the range of hearing it isnt too huge, the hearing aggro range that i have noticed is about 25 steps or so away basically just a little farther then aoe range.

I've found from having to run to Khimiara spawn area that Soulflayer's don't have too much of a hearing aggro range - I have run behind several and not aggroed them. Even with a huge trail of imps behind me.

Of course you could use the other "pet" method. Bring a friend along (low lev prefferably if he knows what you're going to do .. heh..) let him go first and then run past while he gets killed

If your nice you could always tractor & raise him after

I got lucky and unlocked all the staging points the first week they were available. I don't think I've even seen a Soulflayer in game yet.

As far as walk/run, the difference is very minimal. I've stood near sound aggro mobs and aggroed before without doing either. I think I just try to slow down by them as a reflex.

Yeah Soulflayers have limited true hearing, I know because I got smacked down by one while I had sneak/invis up and his back was to me. I had to get close, there was no other way I could see to pass him.

You could always take reraise. If you get aggro run as far as you can, die, reraise. Just make sure you die out of aggro range of any undead or that reraise might not last very long.

Have you tried taking the back way to Ilrusi Atoll? By means of Dvucal Staging Point > Mire > Reef. It's a much shorter walk, and no keys needed. I'm not sure if there are Flayers there, but it is defiantly a nice "shortcut". In case you don't have Dvucal Staging point, make use of the Ruins Teleports, and go from Nash. exit West and hit the ruins that are near zone (I think it's an aggro free walk from Nash to Ruins) and you'll exit just South of the Staging point of Dvucal.

Like the system checks int vs int, mnd vs mnd, and the such, I think they check IQ vs IQ. >.>;; I must of checked too weak and he left me alone <.<

That, or it was just glitchy or a fluke. I was /nin, so maybe stealth job trait kicked in? You could try subbing smn for a pet, but it won't last but maybe 1 hit, or be very patient and wait for a chance to run past it. Now when I need to go somewhere, I sub thf and just flee there.

I wish the game did that glitch when I had to do my blu af sword quest. I have noticed that(at least with the imps) it seems like it may be somewhat random(the aggroing). I find I have more problems with the fleas, than any of the true sight/sound mobs. The best way to get to the staging points is to go with a whm(that has re-raise and raise and invis) and try to work together(have 1 aggro them away from the path while the other hides and waits for the best chance to raise them. Other than that suggestion, i would recommend the same thing as some of the other posters(be careful and run away from them).

As a side note:at lvl 41 I was able to run pretty far through the reef, after aggroing 1 of them, before they killed me(I ended up having 3 of them after me with a few other nasties). they are slow enough to run from(as long as they don't sleep or thunder 4 you).
u have to know when to hold them, know when to fold them

Good point. When I did staging points it was the other way around - do Ilrusi first, then when you teleport there you won't need another lamia key to get to Dvucca; but now with the Alzadaal Ruins open, you can just go through those to get to Dvucca, then after you activate the teleporter, teleport back to Dvucca and go in that entrance to get to Ilrusi. You'll still have to get by imps at least, though.

I second the Reraise suggestion too - staging points are something you only need to get once per character, so it's worth losing 1-2k exp and a few charges from a reraise gorget/hairpin (or if you're cheap, just sub WHM and lose a little more exp but save the gil). Some jobs can also run past aggro to a safe spot, sleep whatever aggroed them and logout. Then you log back in without hate and continue. (If you make it all the way to the gate, going inside will also stop the mob from chasing you when it wakes up. In areas like Ru'Hmet you can also teleport to another floor.) Combining it with the Reraise method, just in case, is a good idea.
