    Re: More noob questions

a linkshell is FFXI's equivalent to a guild/clan. to get one, you have to ask to join and have someone give you a perl

    Thanks Yyg!

The difference between a n00b and a newb

Now an answer to your question:

Linkshells can be considered a membership to a group chat. Linkshells can be purchaced in San D Oria, Bastok, and Windurst. The owner of the Linkshell can create Linkpearls which he can then distribute to other players, as well as promote Pearlholders to Sackholders. Players who have a Linkpearl/Sack/Shell equipped can listed to anything anyone else says in Linkshell chat.

There are several main types of Linkshells:

      1) Social Linkshell
The Social Linkshell is usually composed of a tight group of friends of a larger group of peopls with similar intrests, or, at the very least, get along well together. These linkshells are usually just so people don't get lonely. One branch of social linkshells is the Roleplaying Linkshell, composed of people who linke to roleplay, an oddly rare occurence in a Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game.

      2) Event Linkshells
Event Linkshells are groups of people who like to do stuff together and want an easy way to arrange times for such events. Two main branches of event Linkshells include HMNLS(You will learn about these later, don't need to know now) and Statics, which usually comprise of 6-18 people who make a pledge to work together to complete leveling/missions/qwests together and not exploit others or leave others behind for their own gain.

      3) Hybrid Linkshells
A mix of Social and Event linkshells, Hybrids can either be less businesslike HNM/Event Linkshells, Social Linkshells that do the occasional event, or a variety of everyone at every level that just help everyone else out.

So if you belong to multiple linkshells, how can you tell them apart in the chat log? Are they different colors? Also, how do you respond to each individual linkshell?

Lastly, how can I tell which type of linkshell I am part of?

I am pretty new to this game, so sorry for all the newb questions.

            Re: More noob questions

You have to equip the linkshell to chat in it. While you can carry multiple linkshells around, you can only have one of them actively equipped at any time. You just switch them out depending on scheduling etc.

As far as what type of ls it is, usually that's pretty clear. Most early ones are going to be social or hybrid ones anyway.

              Re: More noob questions

ahh thanks. I was under the impression when you create a linkshell it is given a "type", and depending on the type will denote it's color.

                Re: More noob questions

Nah, a linkshell is just an item essentially. You just pick the name and color when you buy it. You can pretty much name it anything you want within reason and customize the color of the linkshell/linkpearl to any color you'd like.

The type of the shell is ultimately determined by the people who equip the shell.

Keep in mind, linkshell is a term for the original item itself and also for the shell as a whole. A linkshell is divided into 3 different levels so to speak. There are also 3 seperate items used to represent these levels. I'll try to make it easier by differentiating the items with bold to help keep them seperate from the groups they can represent.

The Linkshell is originally purchased by someone usually referred to as the shellholder. Typically this person is the leader of the linkshell as a whole. Once the shellholder equips the item, they are given the option of creating additional linkpearls. These are then handed out to other players to increase the size of the shell. The shellholder can aslo designate members as sackholders by converting their linkpearls to pearlsacks. Members with pearlsacks are usually referred to as sacks or sackholders. They can hand out more linkpearls or 'kick' existing members out of the shell, which breaks their linkpearl and no longer allows them to equip it.

For a practical example, I'll go over the linkshells I'm a member of of.

For my social/event shell, I'm a sackholder. I have this shell equipped 75% of the time.

I have seperate shells for Limbus and Dynamis. I have a linkpearl for both and both shells have two events a week.

My last shell is a CoP shell that I started to get some of my friends through CoP. I'm the shellholder and we run about 2 events a week.
