The Buddy Pass system allows someone who has purchased the Vana'diel Collection for FFXI to give a code to someone else which unlocks the base game for 30 days. It's the only trial system currently in place, and requires that you know someone who has recently purchased the full game (or every once in a while you can get one from online sites like this, but that's not something to rely on).
