  • New to the game....

Hello all! I just started playing, and so far I'm loving it, but was wondering if maybe a bit of advice could be provided. Right now I'm a lvl 4 Hume warrior (Alcebiades) in the San D'Oria area. What's the best way for me to start leveling up, and maybe pick up some cash along the way so I can start gearing myself up? Eventually, I plan to go towards Dark Knight or maybe Dragoon, so are there any particular skills I should start focusing on now? Thanks for your help!

As soon as you gain 1000 Conquest Points, trade them in for an Empress Band at the Signet Guard. That boosts up your Experience Points earned.

Make sure you have Signet on at all times to receive Conquest Points and crystal drops from mobs.

You can collect crystals and sell them by stacks of 12.

For fame in San d'Oria, you can collect Rabbit Hide and Bat Wings when you fight them.

That's all I got right now... good luck!

      Check this.

Everyone will probably agree on the same set of tips for new players.
Get signet, sell crystals, keep your sub levelled, buy food, etc.,etc.

Like what was mentioned above, sell crystals. Depending on your server economy, you can make good money at lower levels by selling stacks of crystals. When you find stackable items, check the auction house to see how much money they go for. This should give you a good idea of some items to hold onto when you're killing mobs so you can sell them later.

For a warrior wanting to go down the direct damage route (Dark Knight, Dragoon), you'll want to spend a bit of time levelling Monk. At level 18, you'll have the option to undertake a quest to unlock support jobs, so it's a good idea to be prepared for this. 15 levels of Monk is probably a good start for you, and you're going to need it once you complete the support job quest.

This also gives you more time to accumulate money (use signet, collect crystals, sell at the auction house, repeat) which you'll need to find your armor and weapon purchases at higher levels.

          ---

Another thing to do is continue to read up in online resources such as this. There are a lot of good references nowadays that can explain virtually everything in the game, such as FFXIclopedia.

The most important thing of all is to make friends and keep your eyes open. FFXI has a lot of hidden complexities that are not immediately obvious. Good contacts in-game are helpful to provide information as well as someone to share experiences with.

Lastly, if you have more questions, feel free to post them here.

            I second that.

The easiest route in my opinion would be to level MNK to 18 first, then WAR to 37.

That way, your WAR sub can be "up to date" with any other job you want to take to 75.

I think the proper term here is "auction." Don't sell your crystals to the NPCs lying all over the city. Go to the auction house and auction off your complete stacks of stuff.

And if you don't know how to make stacks yet, there's a side menu within the Item Menu. There should be a sort button. This will sort EVERYTHING in your inventory. All your equipment and items will be categorized into a more organized form and single pieces of items will be placed into stacks, to conserve inventory space.

Edit: And before you do any kind of selling on the Auction House, you should research the current price trend for whatever it is you're trying to place on auction. Go to 'Buy' when accessing the auction house. And pretend you're going to buy what it is you're selling. But not actually buy it, of course. What you want to do is instead go to the 'Price History' and see what the recent transactions were. Then decide what you want to price your stuff based on the history. Of course, if you price it higher than the history, no one will likely buy your sales. If you price them too low, you might end up making less money than intended.

If you can afford to wait a long time for sales to happen, you can price it at the same price as everyone else's stuff has sold at. If you're not a patient person, then your best bet is to under price some stuff by a few gil. Maybe by 100 or 200 gil. Or even 1000 to 2000. It's up to you.

Thanks for the help guys! So far I'm really enjoying this game. After 5+ years of EQ, and the almost mandatory stint on WoW, I'm glad I found this one. A whole new challenge! Will be sure to follow up on these ideas, so anything else you want to add, feel free!
