Yes, but you wouldn't have access to anything WAR wouldn't have. (Subjobs change this yada yada yada). But yes, you don't forget skills and spells.

the gear pictured is the Artifact or AF set for RDM. it's made up of 5 pieces of armor ranging in levels from 52-60. You don't have to wear the armor or even quest it really. there are countless gear choices, especially for a job as versatile as RDM. most of the AF set though is more then worth picking up

You can change jobs at any time, provided that it is not of the advanced jobs. Advanced jobs you need to complete a quest and also reach level 30 to obtain those jobs. Once you reach level 17 (i think) you can get a quest to obtain a sub job, which lets you sub a job for your main job. For example you can switch to war, and have a sub job of red mage, however people would most likely laugh at you for picking a poor example of a sub job to go with your main job.

Your sub job is half the level of your main job. Say you stopped at level 30 red mage and switched to black mage, when your black mage is level 2 your red mage is level 1, level 3 blm / level 1 rdm, level 4 blm / level 2 rdm.

No, Red Mage does not need to always wear that clothing, however those clothing, also known as Artifact Armor, provides certain things that are helpful for Red Mages to use, i.e. give bonuses to spell accuracy or the like.

Most Red Mages tend to keep their original artifact armor, not in it's entirety, but carry different pieces around.
