  • A few questions about FFXI

I finally got a good job today (after quitting my job as a manager at a restaurant) I finally got back on track to buy FFXI (gotta play all FFs!!!) I will be purchasing the game around christmas (have a $175 bill for passassured [a Pharmacy technician program] and a $100~ exam) and I have a few questions before I get started:

1.) I have low speed DSL, which I know (well, heard) it takes DSL or higher to play. Will my Low-speed DSL cut it? (the company I'm with has two speeds Low speed and High speed; Low speed is still WAY WAY faster than dial up; its just not the FASTEST)

2.) I plan on getting the game for my ps2 bc my computer sucks. I know where to get a HDD and the game, but do I need any "special" connections to play? or do I just somehow use the internet set up on my computer? (and if thats the case, what do I do?)

3.) will a debit card cover as a credit card?

4.) is the game worth getting now? I mean that question as a newcomer (n00b), and am curious to know if there is still a fair amount of newcomers coming in the game or is FFXI a MMORPG just full of experienced players now?

if you can answer those questions for me, it'll help me out alot and save time b4 hand. (if theres anything else I should know; feel free to help meh out!)

sorry, if this in the wrong place, I wasnt sure where to post it.

Re: A few questions about FFXI

    1. should be fine

    2. you will need a network adapter for the PS2 and a router i believe

    3. no, only if it has the master card or visa logo (or epassporte in EU). no other payment methods are accepted

    4. there are always new players in the game. people leave, others come in, etc. I don't think this game is in fear of dying soon.

    Thanks Yyg!

wow, thanks for the quick response; you earn your title as a mod!

umm, well; the debit card I am talking about is a debit card that comes from the bank as a special "card" for students still in high school/college. it can double as a credit card for payments over the internet but instead of "credit" it just takes the money. also, it does carry the visa(?) logo I think. (I THINK now, not sure) still dont think that would work?

I do plan on getting the network adapter, and I do have a wireless router for wireless connection so...do you think that would work? (sorry if thats what youre talking about and I'm an idiot or WAY off; I'm internet ignorant)

Re: A few questions about FFXI

the PS2 network adapter is wired so make sure your wireless router has ports to plug cables into (should, most do).

as for the debit card, i can't be entirely sure because I use a CC myself. however, when in doubt, contact POL support on their website and I'm sure they can tell you.

        Thanks Yyg!

Re: A few questions about FFXI

Be warned about the PS2 version. You must (can't stress this enough) have the old-style PS2 - not the "slim" version. The older style PS2 has the removable bay that allows for the installation of a network adaptor - and there's a cavity inside that allows the HDD to be attached to the adaptor.

The HDD is not compatible with the new slim PS2s, since there's nowhere to plug in the hardware.

As long as your debit card has that visa logo on it, then you're fine. I use the same thing and have no problems at all.
