  • About getting sub-jobs

I am level 17 monk. I understand that at level 18 you can get a sub-job. I was thinking about getting white mage as my subjob. I have seen people with level 8 warrior and level 4 white mage.. does this mean that your levels decrease when you get a subjob? If so, do you lose combat levels? and how many levels to you lose?

What i wanted to do was become a summoner as my main job.. but aparently i have to wait til i'm level 30.. is it worth the wait or should i just go monk/white mage?

    subjobs work like this:

    1. at 18, do the quest to unlock subjobs
    2. your subjob is always half of your main job's level, but won't go higher than what you leveled it
    3. subjobs don't automatically level themselves. you have to switch them to your main job so you can level them

as an example, let's say you have 18 monk, 1 whm, 1 war and 10 thf. if you subjob /whm, you will now be a 18/1 MNK/whm since you never leveled your WHM. now let's say you subjob /thf, you will be 18/9 MNK/thf (remember, half your main level). you don't loose the other 2 levels of THF, you just don't have access to it yet. when your MNK gets to 20, you will now finally be 20/10 MNK/thf. Note, however, if you get to 22 MNK, your THF sub will still be 10 since you never leveled it past that.

MNK/whm is not really a good job combination (for where you are at now). MNK/war is the better combo

    Thanks Yyg!

The people you are seeing are probably leveling subjobs. Once you unlock subjobs, they stay unlocked, and then you usually switch to a level one job to level it with stat bonuses from a subjob, so it's easier to level. You can be a level one job with a level one subjob if you switch your main job to one you've never used before. The requirement is to just get one job to 18 and do the quest, and then you have the subjob at any level for any job.

            If you're playing monk, go monk/war. Don't use mnk/whm.
Summoner is not a fun job to play. Try to party with them and see what they can do before you decide. Summoner are very unloved for exping (altho really well loved for endgames)
