  • Basic Questions

I'm new to the world of Vana'diel, having played WoW for two years, I took a break for the expansion.

I bought FFXI when the game first came out, and I only played to about lvl 10. Apparently it was a mistake quitting so early.
I'm a little confused about some tradeskill stuff, but those things come in time.

For now I have just a few basic questions about stats/skills.

What is the skill level cap for combat skills? (In WoW it was Lvlx5=cap)

And what stats should I focus on getting? As a red mage, I'm already understanding my limits (I have low MP and can't cast many spells without healing and I don't hit too hard with daggers).
Should I focus on boosting my MP? Hybrids in WoW were mostly low-grade healers, is that my job here? Or will I be viable to melee and debuff?

    Thanks for any help!

    skill cap chart: http://www.ausystem.org/%7Eaushacho/...f/skill-e.html
stat calculator: http://ffxi-stat-calc.sourceforge.net/ (works up to lvl 60)

you can't directly affect your stats in this game, you just buy pieces of equipment that add stat bonuses. same for skills (well, except for merits later on).

As for your RDM situation, concentrate on MND gear for white magic enfeebling (debuf) spells and INT for black magic enfeebling spells. Upping max MP is good, but keeping your MP up is more important (juices and +healMP). After 40 and 41, this last bit becomes less of a worry as you gain convert and refresh.

You can melee resonably well into 'bout 40 but after that, you'll have to start relying on ACC+ and ATTK+ gear to remain in the game. This, of course, will have adverse effects on your primary duties of being support so most smart (flame suit on) red mages will just concentrate on support rather than melee.

If you want to magic and melee, play blue mage

It changes for each job for each skill. Each job has a rating in each skill, and that decides on their cap accordingly. For Example, MNK is A+ in H2H, while PUP is C-, so when you compare the H2H caps of the two at each level, PUP is signifigantly lower. As for finding an actual calculation of them, I'm pretty sure there is one posted on this site, although I am not sure where

Red Mage quickly becomes a Class that Enfeebles and Enhances primarily, while being a backup healer (although in many cases you will have to main heal). Stat wise, I'd say grab equipment to boost your MND, INT, and MP, since RDM is one of the weakest mage jobs MP pool wise. Also, Soloing aside, people pretty much frown upon you meleeing past the jungles, I've found. By that point, you'll be busy enough healing and enfeebling and such, any extra time would be best spent /healing.
