So I've got about 15 days left of free subscription and I was wondering, when and if I make the switch over to regular retail - will I have to purchase the base game itself? I know I'll have to individualy buy the expansion, but as far as just the ffxi - will that need to be repurchased?

If you already have the software installed and are playing, then no, you won't need to purchase anything else except the expansions.

Your account will automatically start accruing charges as of day 31 (the first month is pro-rated until the end of the month, so if you have 15 days left as of today, your trial period will end on or around October 6th, and you'll be charged for the 25 days of October if you don't cancel before then. Also keep in mind that the end of the month, the registration servers go down for maintenance (usually around the last day of the month plus the first day of the next), so you won't be able to un-register during that period.

you'll actually need to cancel before Sept 30 if you don't want to be charged anything (you'll still get to play until Oct 6). Otherwise, you'll be charged on Oct 1 for Oct 7-31.
