What tis the merit points?

Okay so i've been playing FFXI for like 1 month now... I'm really slow at leveling since i lovve to explore Windurst. I'm currently lvl 11WHM. And i've been reading up ont he forums.. Merit points..... What are merit points? I've been searcing in the search option for what they are. But to no success. Can anyone explain to me in a detailed paragraph what they are and what they do.

I read a post that merit points are extra stats points? Is that true? and it requires a specific amount of EXP to obtain 1 merit point. I'm very curious about these merit points and stuff. But i do not know what they are. Hehe

Merit points are something you earn once you hit level 75 (or once you hit the exp cap for 75 if you prefer). They can be used to increase the ability of various spells and abilities, and are all the rage among the endgame set.
