Re: Worth of buying?
I don't have a buddy pass I can give you, but if you buy the game I would be more than happy to give you a world pass. Just for clarity, here is an overview of the game:
General:
The graphics are VERY realistic, as in it feels like Vana'diel exsisted one time. However, because the game was orrigionally made for the PS2, the graphics you start out with are rather low quality. If you are on the computer, you can tweak the graphics to make them better than almost any MMO though.
Final Fantasy XI is full screen, so you orrigionally can't do anything else(on your computer, if thats what your playing on). There are programs called "windowers" that let you play FFXI in a window, and do other things. These are against the ToS, and if caught you will be suspended/banned, but because over 70% of the computer players use this anyway, you won't get banned unless you shout "I'm using a windower, ban me plz!"
The world is not seemless. It is made up of "zones" you must travel to then load. Some people perfer seemless worlds, but in FFXI the zones are good because if you zone while a monster is attacking you it stop, and this can save your life.
For the most part, quests never give experience. A few will give an item that can be used for experience. The quests vary greatly, from riding a chocobo from one city to the next in under 18 min, to binging back certain items. Most have a storyline attached to them. Most will give you nothing worthwhile as a reward, but you do them anyway to be able to do the quest that do give good rewards(the fame levels talked about earlier)
There are also missions in FFXI. Theses are alot more storyline based, and give no particuarly good items untill the very end, but it is useful to do anyway because it gives you acess to cool things.
The majority of armor and weapons(as well as several items) in this game are obtained through one of three methods. There are Crafting, NMs(Notorious/Named Monsters) and Battlefields. Crafting consists of using a crystal on several other, "material" items. NMs are particuarly strong monsters that often drop a rare material to be used in crafting, or a rare armor. Battlefields consist of BCNM and ENMs, and you have to fufill a set of conditions to enter, then defeat all the monsters. At the end you are awarded with a treasure chest that holds items,a nd in the case of ENMs, EXP.
FFXI is NOT PvP. There are 2 instances only in this game where you can fight other players. These are brenner and ballista, team sport matches, though ballista can be arranged to be 1 on 1.
Early levels: 1-30
You start the game in one of three starting cities, Windurst(City of confusing, but pretty pathways[Map needed!]), Bastok(City of dirt, grime, and barren wastelands), and San D Oria(City of snobby elvann and rude... snobs.) Each one has it's cons and pros, so chose whatever one you want.
After you start the game, go to a "gate"(A zone into outside). In any outside or dungenous zones, monsters can attack and kill you, but you can also attack and kill monsters. Grab Signet from a guard at a gate, and start killing. Keep all items you find and sell them at the Auction House, and use the money from that to buy better armor and weapons. DO NOT TRY TO CRAFT YET.
After you reach level 10, you can start to group together with other players to earn better experience points, though some people put this off untill level 20 due to teh large amount of clueless people who you can't understand, who won't take advide, and talk with numbers and 1337 $|>3/-\|<(see? told you you can't undertsand them), called n00bs. New players, like you, are refered to as newbs.
General EXP party layoutthough there are many alternatives)
10-20 Valkurm Dunes
20-25 Qufim Island
25-30 Yhutunga/Yhoator Jungle
At level 18, you can get a support job. at level 20, you can travel to jeuno and get your chocobo licence. at level 25, you can do up to rank 3 in missions and get an airship pass to Kazahm and the jungles. At level 30, you can do quests to unlock advanced josb and make them playable. You can also start CoP missions if you wish.
Mid-Early Levels: 31-49
The Experience Points it takes to level up starts increasing dramatically, but you get EXP faster to. You can start camping NMs and farming(killing weaker monsters for their "drops") and possibly crafting. At level 40, you can do Battleground(BCNM) at level 40 cap, the most commonly done ones, aside from KSNM 30s. These require a certain amount of Kindred Seals or Beastmen's Seals. Slow path to 50, nothing new.
Middle Levels: 50 - 65
At 50, 55, 60 and 65, you have to do Limit Break quests to continue leveling. These are know an Genki by japaneese. They are assigned by a NPC called Maat in Ru Lude gardens.
Though you could do it at 41, at 50 or 51 you will want to do your Artifact 1 quest for a worthless weapon you can usually throw away as soon as you get it. Then at 52, you can do Arfifact 2 and at 60, Artifact 3. There are armor, not weapons, that are VERY useful. There are also pieces at 54, 56 and 58 you can obtain from quests or coffers that are useful also. These dress you up like the old FF characters. At 50 you can also start doing Aht Rugan contect aside from the lv 30 jobs.
Mid-High levels: 65-70
At 65, if you have beat the Shadowlord, you can start doing Ziliart Missions and Dynamisis. Ziliart Missions allow you acess to Sky, a floating castle where gods and poiwerful NMs live, though you don't fight them untill later. Dynamisis is a alternate reality, a Vana'Diel run be beastmen. You can obtain Relic Armor, a "HQ" Artifact Armor, here(though there is actual HQ AF and RF). At level 70, you have one last quest from Maat - to beat him in a battleground. This will allow you to advance to 75.
High Levels: 70-75
At 70, many characters join a HNMLS,(Hyper-NM Linkshell), also known as a Dramafest. All y ou need to know about this untill you get there is this is where the majority of the quests, missions, events, armor, fun, and, though I wish I could leave it out, stress in FFXI comes from.
