  • Questions about suspending an account

    If, hypothetically, I were to cancel my FFXI subscription today, what would be the absolute last date I would have to resume paying fees to make sure my character information isn't lost forever, with and without the one-time per account character restoration?

    Also, I have seven digits of gil in the bank. Not enough to make anyone fall out of their chair, but enough that I'd make this face if I lost a significant fraction of it. Do you think it would be wiser for me to liquidate most of my gear and put it in gil in case of deflation, or invest it all in a high dollar item in case of inflation? If the latter, what item or items do you think would be the most stable investment?

    I left a Content ID cancelled for seven months and she was still there when I returned. You probably have about a year or so.

        Re: Questions about suspending an account

        From what I've seen of ffxi, it seems that prices rise, prices fall, but not as much as they rise. It all goes back to supply and demand. Some things are unlimited...stuff that can be bought from NPC, anytime, conquest regardless, shop hours and day regardless. Some things are limited only by what time you can obtain them. Some things are limited in amount obtainable.

        The first set of items will never undergo a significant price change, because the prices are NPC monitored.
        The second set of items will fluctuate wildly within short periods of time, like the Vanadiel week. An item aviailable from a guildhall will follow the price of the guild NPCs very closely, until the day the guild closes. Then the price will spike dramatically. When the guild opens again, the price drops off. <--- used to take advantage of this with bait from the fishing guild
        The third set of items are the only ones that will reliably rise in price over time. They will most likely do it slowly, and there are fewer of them than might be supposed.

        Few crafted items are on this list. Nothing gardenable or purchaseable from any NPC is on it that I know of. Nothing that can be 'replaced' is on it...
        ~~~~~
        Example of the last one. To my knowledge, grain seeds are not sold by any NPC. However, the best item to garden from them, tarutaru rice, is I believe sold by the cooking guild. Hence...while the seeds themselves are limited in supply, only so many mobs drop them, and they only spawn so often and only drop seeds at such a percent drop rate (hence one can calculate the maximum number of grain seeds entering the economy in any given time slot), the absolute essentiality of their presence to the economy is questionable.
        ~~~~~

        Basically, it comes down to NM/HNM drops. Of which the list that is not rare/ex is dwindling swiftly.

        Now we can examine another angle. Lets say you decide to store your money in the form of....oh...a kraken club. Hypothetically. That's a good way to store 400 million on midgard with one item slot.

        Who are you going to buy the club from?

        And

        Who are you going to sell it to?

        Now those can be some interesting questions, questions I can't answer, as the most gil I have ever seen in one place has been about 3 million.

        I tried to buy a viking sheild with it, failed miserably...but I will have my viking someday....my precious...beware of the hobbit.

        Ahem.

        Assuming that I was going to go away for an extended period of time, and had a lot of cash to sink, I would do it in two parts.

        Part A. I would spend prolifigately on things I considered buying for myself but didn't think they were worth the money.

        Every possible piece of gear would be upgraded to plus one. This will suck money pretty fast, and while I would probably never try to recover the money by selling those items...good gear is universal. Even if the economy crashes and people are trading behemoth hides for fire crystals and throwing away dorado sushi because it's not the fashion to eat raw fish anymore, good equipment will STILL be good equipment.

        Not to mention, you're probably gonna need that leg up while you brush off the rust.

        Part B. I would keep a percentage of my gil liquidated, but the bulk of my fortune would be spent on other equipment pieces, universally attractive ones, like Scorpion Harness that's been around since the dawn of my recorded awareness of FFXI and never devalued by any other item. Sniper rings, perhaps. Elemental staves (the HQ versions only though). A number of different items with different stats. For example, I might invest in a scorpion harness and a noble's tunic. Even if an unforseen update renders one of the items obsolete, the other would still be viable for sale.

        Yes, it was inspired by the Simpsons
        If you know how to download and use VRS, I am interested in being tutored.

            One year, but delete your CONTENT ID, *NOT* your character.

            And *NEVER* delete your POL ID, since that is entirely *FREE*
