  • Cancelling PlayOnline Account

    Hello...

I'm currently trying to help a friend cancel his PlayOnline account (not the ContentID), because he's done playing it and doesn't want to be charged for using the game anymore... how does he go about cancelling his PlayOnline account (not the ContentIDs.. they are already cancelled) he says theres no option to cancel the account in the Membership area..

If someone could help us that'd be great.. or just email him at: seizure_ca@hotmail.com

    Thanks

The Playonline ID is not charged to you, it is technically free and you wont get charged for having it. Instead if you deleted your POL ID, and your friend comes back for whatever reason, he will need a NEW copy of the game. So dont delete it, in case your friend ever wants to come back down the road, and he wont get charged for it. Only thing you get billed for is Content IDs.

Here's the order through which you go to cancel your POL Account (which can be reactivated at any time, should you choose to...)

From the main menu, after you are logged into POL:
Service & Support > Guide > (7)Unsubscribing from PlayOnline and cancelling PlayOnline Content IDs > Unsubscribe.

From there, follow the steps on-screen.

Whenever you try to log on after doing this, you will be asked to put in some information, including your credit card number, in order to successfully log into PlayOnline.

So this is to stop payment not kill ur account altogether and then having to buy a new copy.
So if u a buddy pass to register and the trial period is up, my card gets automatically charged? same goes using an official copy too?

There is no charge for the Viewer itself. The only charges are for the games that are registered. If this is what your friend is trying to cancel, I don't recommend it unless he's never never ever ever coming back to FFXI. As previously stated, he'd have to buy another PlayOnline ID - which means buying another FFXI gamepack.

          edit:

Canceling the PlayOnline ID will force you to buy a new copy of the game if you return to it because you'll need a new PlayOnline ID (might need new FFXI reg codes, too). Charges are suspended when FFXI Content IDs are canceled.

And, yes, once your trial period is up, your credit card is automatically charged for the current prorated month and the next full month. Only the month following the trial period is prorated. If Content IDs are canceled or reactivated, partial months are charged as full months.

edit: Don't want to be misleading. ^_~

"Installed" is a bit misleading. You don't have to uninstall FFXI to keep from being billed. The only thing you have to do is cancel your Content IDs (the ones that let you make characters). PlayOnline, as has been pointed out several times now, is free, and if you cancel it, you're screwed if you ever want to come back.

Edit: Well now I just look silly!

There is no rush. If you're not willing to take your time, don't be surprised when no one wants to give you much of theirs.

Hmmm, hadn't thought of it that way - and hadn't meant it that way - but I can see your point. I was only saying that charges are for the games themselves. How about "registered"?

Yeah, half and half right here. Tsikuro has it right that it gives you a chance to re-activate the POL ID, but it for only a limited time. If you pass that time then that is it you will have to buy a new game and all of the expansions you intend to use, all registry codes are tied to that single POL ID once it's wiped out that's it you are screwed.

Which is why it's just best to just cancel your Content ID and you'll be fine. As already said like 6 or 7 times before POL Viewer is free, you'll even be able to update FFXI without the Content ID. It'll stop you though the instant you try to create a player and the option to enter the game will not be there without a Content ID.

POL is an intended service to expand on for more of SEs online based games. Though with PS3 and how the game consoles are creating their centralized online hubs if POL is going to advance much beyond PS2 and PC games I'm not sure about.
