I mean, I started as Whm as my very first job. By the time I got Whm to 40, I already knew how to play almost every other job without having to play one. I switched to those jobs, including THF, and I could perform everything just fine. I could pull, I could skillchain, I could hold hate if I'm a tank and etc.

A huge part of this is PTing with a good player. Seeing how experienced players play taught me a lot. This is also something you'll miss out having a PL at early levels.

I know there are level 75 n00bs out there. But these people, PL or not will still never learn how to play.
I disagree. You can get a rough estimate of how to do a job by repeatedly watching it be played but you can't learn the entire job that way. Each person has their own flavor for playing a job and everyone puts their own skill into it once they play it. And sometimes you just don't have the skill to play a job well even if you watched someone lvl it for 75 lvls with you in a static pt. Playing is entirely different from watching. I can watch a surgeon do his job but that doesn't mean I can do it.

still better than being in a PL PT and learn nothing at all. you won't even get to see how the job should be play that way. Besides, the very first moment I got my SATA I could land it almost 100% already. Because I watched and learnt.

It is a waste of time for someone staring out on there first character. It allows someone else to keep you alive, outside of the party, and disallows you to learn how to handle links, and other bad stuff that is needed to know later on during the game.

Re: What exactly is Power Leveling

One time that I PL for my wife it was almost necassary because they did not have a tank. In that sense, there was no tank that was lacking on skills. Most of the time though, I do not like to be PL. When you have someone holding your hand it takes away the fun and challenge of the game. For me, it's funner to act like a team, having everyone do their part to keep the exp rolling.

Also, my wife the WHM and me a PLD were in a party yesterday when another PLD at my level helped to cure me. This pissed my wife off beyond belief because she complained that she wasn't able to do her job. Even though it wasn't that big off a deal, she wanted to be the one healing since she was in the party. It also aggravated me a little because as we all know, PLD need their cures to hold hate.

Final note: PL is good for soloing in the early levels but by the time you get to 15 you and your team should fight your own battles.
You kill one man, your a murderer

Re: What exactly is Power Leveling

Power levelling, imo, is a double edged blade. When you're first starting out the game, or starting out on a job that is very different from your 'main' then you might be better off avoiding it. You don't learn anything if you've got someone standing over you doing all the curing.

This is especially true for the whms. Your Healing and Enhancing magic skills are the lifeblood of your party. If you spent the time from 10-20 with a powerleveller and those skills are horribly under cap, all you've done is hurt yourself and anyone you party with in the future.

The same can be said for the melee, particularly the tanks, who really need to learn how to keep the poor little mages safe without someone being there to soak up hits.

It can have its pros, I suppose, if it's a static party and it's your second or third job through and you're already wise to how things should work.

Personally I don't like it much. I've had more headache than anything else when a member of the party has brought a PL along in the dunes. I'm thankful I'm more or less past the point where people do PL, that way I don't have to listen to some random pt member nag about getting one.

That said, I've pl'ed solo players from my linkshell when they were in La Theine or whatnot, but I'm not fond of doing party situations. I've only done it twice, and it was boring for me and the mages inside the party. I find it rather dull and prefer not to do it. But that's me.

Re: What exactly is Power Leveling

I like to solo PL my friends through their beginning job levels 1-15~ on my bard. I set up an invite macro, toss them my highest minuet and madrigal, then use my kick macro and away they go slaughtering things that they'd normally whiff at 15 times in a row. Then I toss myself a ballad two, toss them a cure or two, and repeat the process. It's a lot more fun than PLing on WHM. Run out of mobs, just pop on a chocobo Mazurka and find some more. ^^ Everyone loves mazurka.

Re: What exactly is Power Leveling

The problem with most PLers is they don't care if they're the tank and main healer, they just want to help their friend get through those levels quickly. I've rarely seen a person that PLs a party the way I used.

I always insisted that the tank(s) voked. I did not want hate and always let them know that if the tanks weren't doing their job, I would leave. I also let them know that the highest cure they would get from me during a fight would be Cure 1 (Cure 2 if an absolute emergancy) and that the healers had to be busy curing as well. I would aid the healers with the curing duties but I would refuse to take over their jobs. I would also offer out advice as the party progressed but only to the jobs I had experience playing. As for links, if it was a case of something spawning at the camp and aggroing the party or the puller on his way back to camp, I'd take care of it. If it's a case of repeated links because the puller is becoming lazy and ignoring what aggros, then I leave.

Most of the time, PLing can be a bad thing. If done with minimal interferance to the way a party works, then it can be a good thing. The players will get the skills they need while knowing there is help in the case of an extreme emergancy. The problem is, I rarely see a PLer that helps with minimal interferance.

Re: What exactly is Power Leveling

Power leveling is ok....to a point.

In the dunes, it's perfectly fine to bring a PL along, because of all of the irregularities at such a low level (gobs, bogies, etc), but there's a certain point you just need to let go and actually do your job.

In the long run, all Power leveling does is create watered down jobs. If people continue to rely on PLer's, they cannot properly do their job right, and they will slack in the presence of a higher healer. Sure, they'll level quicker, but PL'ers are probably the main reason there are so many people who don't know how to do their job at a higher level.
