Not normally... there are adaptor for the HDD to work with the slim one floating around e-bay, but they are unofficial and imo not reliable.

Sony intentionally made the slim system incompatible with the HDD so SCEA and SCEE could drop support for it. The only way to make the system compatible with it is risky and voids the warranty. The contacts for the IDE controller are still present on the slim PS2 montherboard, so if you remove the top of the case and solder all 40 pins to an IDE connector, you can plug the HDD into it with an IDE ribbon cable. However, that makes the HDD external, and requires you to provide Molex poer from an external source, since the slim systems have no places to attach a Molex connector and output the right voltage.

FYI, Japan still has the model 50000 systems still in production, and sells them bundled with BB Units. SquareEnix of Japan currently has six games listed in their PlayOnline Viewer, five of which are on PS2 and require the HDD. Final Fantasy VII Dirge of Cerberus is the most recent, preceded by Front Mission Online, and the three games that came in Japanese PS2 FFXI's box.

From what I've read, you can't be a newbie at soldering to accomplish this. I guess that goes without saying, though.

As usual, Sony couldn't deliver on their too-heavy promises with the HDD. Remember those ads? "Persistant online worlds, streaming media, downloadable content."

Only one of those three things advertised made it through, and with only one game.

The least SCEA could have done was to add the function to install games to the HDD like Japan did. Makes that extra 30GB go to waste, really.

Apparently SCEA and SCEE were planning to make the HDD fail if they even had to release it in the first place. What else would explain the removal of HDD support from all PAL releases of Japanese games that had that support, and the same removal from most American releases of those games? Also, SCEA brought over the oldest HDD interface software, which was 3 years old at the time they released the HDD here, instead of PSBBN, which had been out for 2 years, and has a language select setting in the Japanese version, meaning it just needs an English language module to have the interface in English.

Their official reason is products like HDLoader, but they had THREE YEARS to release the HDD before then, where HDLoader likely wouldn't have been developed much faster, and HDLoader was mainly a big deal (judging by posts on homebrew and gaming forums) because there was so little official HDD support and people felt the capacity of their HDD was going to waste. HDLoader just came at a convenient time, so they slapped the blame on it and moved on to an incompatible model. Who knows what the real reason is...? Either way, Japanese HDD support started with Final Fantasy X, and support was removed from the American release of that game, and every game afterwards until SOCOM 2, and even a few games after that.

Square is the biggest supporter of the HDD in Japan, as far as I've seen, though maybe equaled or beaten by Capcom. Why would they go and remove the support willingly from every American release of their software EXCEPT FFXI, when they were trying to get FFXI released for so long? Why would so many other companies do so with their games too? I don't think it was their decision to do so.
