    Conquest and Besieged...
Can anyone briefly explain what exactly these are?

I'm almost always "participating in my nation's conquest", because before I go out to level, I will have a TK(in San d'Oria) cast Signet on me just so I can farm for Elemental Crystals. But...I still have no clue about it other than that.

Well, without getting in to a bunch of details you can read about elsewhere, Conquest is the way the three nations of Quon and Mindartia have decided to settle their differences. The old world is divided up in to a number of regions. A region can be controlled by any nation, or it can fall under the control of the beastmen. When an adventurer earns experience points in a region, with signet on, she also earns Conquest Points. These contribute to the influence of her nation in that region. Each RL week, the game looks at each region and whoever has the most influence gains control of the region for that week.

While a region is controlled by a nation, there are certain goods that will be available from NPCs in that nation's home town. For example, when San d'Oria has control of the Zulkheim Region (Valkurm, La Thiene, and Konschtat), an NPC is available in San d'Oria that sells Selbina Milk and other regional goodies. The controlling nation also has access to that region's Outpost.

The nations are ranked by the number of controlled regions. The nation in first place gets some special NPCs in their town, and some special items can be purchased from the gate guards for Conquest Points.

As for Besieged, it's like a Conquest system for the new areas in the Treasures expansion. I haven't had much chance to play with it, but it is similar in that you earn Imperial Standing points by killing mobs (and gaining exp from them) in expansion areas with the Sanction spell cast on you. I'm sure others can elaborate.

Besieged also incorperates Assault and the actual Besieged. Periodicly the beastmen will raid the city, kidnap NPCs, steal things, etc. Assault missions can be done to keep the beastmen from training enough mobs to attack the city, rescue NPCs that have been taken prisoner, and also to recover stolen items. This form of conequest however is mostly for higher level characters.

Conquest is the system for tracking the relative strength of each nation. Getting Signet means anytime you earn XP, points are added to your nation's strength in the region you're in at the time.

Every week there's a tally to determine who has control of each region for that week, and who is in first/second/third. Your nation's standing has several effects. The nations in first and second will have more items available at their shops, and the nation in first will have the traveling circus troupe. The nations in second and third have their Signet last longer.

There are several other ways to add to your nation's strength in a region. You can trade armor to vendors at the Outpost, or do an Expeditionary Force there, etc. Doing any of this stuff also gets you Conquest Points (CP), which you can use to purchase certain items from the guards of your nation (T.K.s in your case). You can also spend Conquest Points at the guards in Jeuno, or at the guards for any nation that currently ranks below yours. For example, if San d'Oria is in second and Windurst in third, you could go to Windurst and get certain Windurst conquest items for twice the normal CP cost.

Beseiged is sort of Conquest for the new areas in the ToAU expansion. The way Beseiged is calculated is different, and has different effects (I think), but it's the same concept. I don't know much about it because I haven't done anything with it yet.

          Ah.
So, Conquest doesn't require you to go out and do any special Quests or Missions...
It's just...gain XP in an area...Gain control of that area...Get more items in your Nation's City.
          =3

          Edit
Ah. I can also buy stuff from TKs?

I take it I shouldn't worry about Besieged until I at least have a SubJob, and am alot higher of a level.

          Thanks for the clarification.

That's about it. You also want your nation to gain control of regions so you can do supply quests to their outposts. Once you have done a supply quest to a region, an NPC in your home town will teleport you to its outpost for a little bit of gil. It's the best way to get around the world at higher levels.

You sure can. There are lots of nifty pieces of armor and stuff that are useful at various levels. As you advance in rank (by doing national missions), more items become available.

Yeah, unfortunately a most of the content in the new areas is focused on characters level 50 and higher. I know it seems like a rub for many of the newer players, but FFXI has been out for a very long time and there are a great many higher-level players that really needed some new stuff to do.

Generally, yes. Some people make concerted efforts to control certain regions, forming linkshells or groups to do it, and do a lot more than XP in those areas to make sure they do it. Most players just XP with signet on and let each region go to whichever country happens to take it.

When you talk to them, there's an option that says "I want to spend some of my Conquest points" or something like that.

If you're in Al Zahbi when beseiged is happenning, I suppose you can participate in it right away at any level. The beastmen that attacks, however, can be very strong that they can push back even hundreds of 75s.

Oh ... and another important point. Dying loses a certain amount of CP (For the nation and not the player) that is (approrpriate to the level of the area) A high level dying in a lower level area will cause his/her nation a major setback in conquest versus a low level player dying in a high level area. Enough deaths in Dunes always make the conquest in the area quite uncertain.

Important reasons for the success of your home nation in conquest:

                    -Benefit of outpost teleportation services.
-Receiving a bonus effect (Duration) of signet when leveing in area of your home conquest.
-Certain regional vendors will be able to provide goods in the home country that is in power of that region, which makes crafting less of a pain.
-Nation with the highest standing in conquest will gain the availability of a certain traveling troupe which holds some desirable goods and services.
-Nation with the highest standing in conquest will also have certain "rare" items for sale to their citizens to purchase (CP items via Gate Guards)

                      So.
What does it take for my Nation to take control of an area?

Your nation needs more influence accumulated in that week than any other nation, and more than the beastmen (beastmen gain strength each time a player is defeated in a region).

A scroll of instant reraise takes such a short time to use, you only use it when you know you are about to die. All status effects wear off after a period of time. It's a balance to not make the game too easy. You still deal with weakness for a few minutes afterwards though, so it's not that useful when leveling in the zone right outside a city. I keep it more on hand when I'm the WHM in a party, in case I need to use Benediction.
