I count FFXI as entertainment cost - something that could go to any other use, such as: cinema trips, eating out, drinking & clubbing, cigarettes, yadda, yadda.
I quit smoking 2 years ago, I hardly ever drink & admittedly, sometimes I do obviously spend money on other entertainment such as going to the cinema, but overall, my "time out/having fun" costs are still far less than those of many people I know. An aquaintance of mine recently spent £50 on one night out and didn't bat an eyelid about it. I would never do that, but I happily pay my monthly fee for my main char and 2x mules!
It's what suits the individual - when I no longer get any enjoyment out of FFXI, then it's time to throw my money in some other direction.
