there is a free trial in the sense that you can play the game online for free for a month, however I dont beleive the game itself will ever be free in a downloadable format. You still need to purchase the game from a store/online

What you should do is search these forums for the most technical aspects od the game you can find. There are many benefits to playing the game if you know the mathmatical equations to certain abilities as well as the social factor and goal oriented play.
Try bringing up more positive and "educational" aspects of the game to your Mother. She might see it differently after that.
And, I was a kid at one time...never underestimate the power of constant bugging...Comment

One other option (but kind of a shot in the dark) is that if a friend buys a copy of the Vana'diel Collection (I don't know about the Xbox versions), they get a free month for a friend. I think I have mine around here somewhere. Basically it allows you to play a month of the game for free, but you still have to provide credit card information, I beleive, which may trip you up, unfortunately.
In the end, you still have to buy the software and pay the monthly fee, but if you know someone with that free trial you could at least give it a shot and see if it's even the right game for you. (Some people find that it isn't.)
