There's a separate monthly fee for FFXI, regardless of what version you're using.

But you don't necessarily need xbox live, or to pay the associated fees, to play FFXI on the 360.

The monthly fee for the 360 version is 4.52 + .32 for additional characters. Of course this is on top of the xbox live fee.

In what currency is that? According to the official site, it's still 12.95 USD for the first character and 1 USD for each additional character. I'd been told that Xbox Live is not required to play.

USD. I just double checked. Says that after my trial it is $4.17 for the first id and $0.32 for each additional ID. Sorry I was off before.

It works like this:

There is Xbox Silver and Xbox Gold memberships. You will need one of them in order to play FFXI. Silver is free and Gold is not. So basically if you do not want to play any other games online besides FFXI, Silver is for you. If you're going to start buying 360 games with the intent of playing them online (ie Call of Duty, Perfect Dark Zero, etc.) then you'll need the Gold membership.

Let's say you go with the free one, then your only fees will be your monthly FFXI fees. It is charged to your card from SE and not from Xbox. As stated above, its $12.95 USD a month. Additional characters and Tetra Master are an additional $1.00 each per month.

I have a Gold Account so I guess that makes sense. I was unaware I could even do any of this without a Gold membership.

You have to link the POL account to a Xbox Live account to play. And once you do, you cannot change it. So your POL account will be linked to your Xbox gamertag forever...at least that's the way the message read when I first logged into the game on my 360. But I have the gold account and I pay 12.95 a month + the annual fee for my Gold membership.

Like TheGrandMom said, you need the Gold if you want to play the other Live enabled games online, so overall it can pay off for you if you play quite a few of the games online.

Possibly your trial ended 20 days into the month, so they only charged you 1/3 of the fee since the other 2/3 was free?

The normal fee for playing FFXI is 12.95, plus a $1 for every additional character. When your trial period is over, your rate will go up too.

Yeah, 360 players should just be ending their prorated month of service. (or maybe they got the first month free and as of the 2xth they'll prorate the rest of the month.)
