You can only move an existing character from server to server if SE does a world migration, which only happens in rare circumstances like the xbox beta server closing. You can either continue with your existing character or start from scratch on a new server.

um i'm a newb, are servers like worlds that u can go to? does someone mind explaining this to me?

Yes, servers and worlds are the same thing. When you log on to FFXI, it says << Welcome to (server-name) >> in the chatlog.

Yes, as stated before, but you need a Worldpass too.

Correct. Unless like was said, every once in a blue moon there may be a world migration in which SE tells you, that you can move your char and mules to a preselected server.

But years may go by between world migrations. I don't imagine we'll see another one until FFXI's population drops so much they start merging servers, which hopefully won't be for a long time.

If you have a lot of friends playing, yeah. Get one of them to get you a gold worldpass and you can start on their server and get some little trinkets every couple months.
