  • Will it work?

Two buddies and myself are thinking of starting up FFXI again. Will we be able to be successful as a 3-man team playing the right classes?

I can't count how many times I've seen these types of posts. To advance in FFXI you will need to party for most of the game. 3 man teams for the most part will not work out, or if they do, you'll be strapped for experience since killing even match - tough only gives 60~ exp with a two man team.

What would be a great trio to start with and then invite other people as we need them?

        Re: Will it work?

You could go for ( NIN or PLD ), WHM, ( RDM / BRD ). The all you need to do is find DDs to make a 6 man party, you already have the hardest people to find.

If you want to level only as a Trio then you're better off all going BST or exp will be alot slower,

          Re: Will it work?

          So WAR/? until 30, switching to NIN/WAR, WHM/? until 75, and RDM/? until 30 switching to RDM/BRD?

How viable is the 3-Man BST trio? Isn't it an advanced job so we'd have a rough time leveling to 30?

            Re: Will it work?

a trio of BSTs rocks! if you want to go all the way to 75 with just 3 people, 3 BSTs is the way to go.

if you just want to play together and invite people along the way, i'd recommend you choose a tank (PLD or NIN), a healer (WHM or RDM/whm) and a refresher (BRD or RDM). Those 3 roles are core to any party and as Kaf said, just get some damage dealers to fill out the ranks.

            Thanks Yyg!

              Re: Will it work?

to put it bluntly, bst is the only job you can play as a trio. Nothing else. If you don't like 6-people parties and you can't stand the bst job, then this game is not for you.

Trio of smns can work. Similiar concept to a trio of bst.

                  Re: Will it work?

But how would one level to 30 as a trio to get access to the advanced jobs of BST and SMN?

                    Re: Will it work?

all of teh post befor seem to be ignoreing the one key aspect that you 3 are not at 30yet so here is a basic 3pt base up but i doubt you will go all the way to 30 with just the 3of you.

WHM, WAR, then you can fill the ranks with a RDM(backup healer/dd, a BLM(PURE DD BOOYA), a MNK(another DD),and i think thats about it THF(xtra gil/drops aND MAKE N OK DD LATER LVLS) if you really want but i dont like it so....i wouldnt chose it.
Many people call me but i think they are just jealous that the voices are talking to me

                      Re: Will it work?

go to 30 as WAR, WHM and RDM. that way, if you go BST, you can go BST/war, BST/whm and BST/rdm.

getting to 30 as WAR, WHM and RDM is fairly do-able (tried it when I restarted). It's slower than a good party, but definately faster than going it alone. You'd need to be smart about picking the mobs though, eg nothing that can one-shot you.

                      Thanks Yyg!

Awesome. Thanks for the tips guys. Hopefully this helps. Anything else we should be aware of?

                          Re: Will it work?

Levelling together with other people is very difficult. Not only is it hard to find people who exactly match your playing schedule (even if you live with each other, it's incredibly hard to always be on at the same time), but things like the occasional KO will knock your XP out of alignment with one another. Even more important is if one of you decides they want to use an advanced job: that person will need to get to level 30 on one job, then start over with the advanced job.

I would be more inclined to recommend that each of you play jobs that you enjoy, or failing that, play jobs that work as support jobs for what you want to play. Yes, this might mean you won't always be playing together in the same party, but it also means that you're not "working" while playing a game.

Besides, the trip from 0 to 30 doesn't really take all that long until you stop for Kazham airship access keys around level 24. For you, I'd recommend that all three of you pick a job that you think you'll enjoy, then ask intelligent questions about what path to take to succeed at each job.

Once all three of you are at least level 30 in a basic job, then come back and ask this question again. You may find that you'll need to "resynchronize" your character levels or level additional subjobs too.

Speaking of subjobs, you need to be aware that you're going to have to take time out of your levelling together to level your subjobs (only your primary job can gain experience, so to level a support job you'll have to switch to that job and play it for a while to level it up).

                              Depends.

You might need a Healer, Damage Dealer & Support.
